Ha realizzato per la chitarra classica due cd di sue composizioni usciti per l'etichetta indipendente DotGuitar gestita dal Maestro Lucio Matarazzo, si intitolano Cahier des chansons anciennes nn. 1 e 2, il primo suonato da Marcello Rivelli e il secondo da Ermanno Brignolo. Questa sera li ascoltiamo entrambi, si tratta di musica contemporanea ma decisamente estranea alle correnti di Darmstadt o alla musica dodecafonica.

Review of No Time (at all) by Diego Castro Magas

It seems not a day passes that the guitar showes the deep interest that “she” rises to the contemporary composers. Diego Castro Magas 's CD also shows this interest across the ocean and more specifically in Chile. It's a very interesting disc, this one titled No Time (at all) and it's for several good reasons, above all for the great instrumental skills showed by Diego Castro Magas, excellent guitarist that here demonstrates all his technical expertise, in secundis for the high quality of compositions recorded here that show the important presence of a school for the Chilean contemporary guitar.

The CD, self-produced by guitarist directly to CDBaby, begins with a classic guitar contemporary “songs” like the two "Algo" by Italian composer Franco Donatoni and ends with No Time (at all) by Brian Ferneyhough, British composer linked to the "new complexity ", along with music by five composers Chilean Pablo Aranda, Cristian Morales Ossio Alejandro Guarello, Hilda Paredes and Francisco Silva.

The dissolution of the time, a new concept of sound in space, the guitar used in an unconventional way they seem to be the foundation of the music played on this CD, as are the ideas of Walter Benjamin, German philosopher, writer and literary critic, quoted several times in the beautiful booklet that accompanies the disc. A dimension of time travel and space hovers in the notes played by the wonderful guitar of Diego Castro Magas, a record that should not be missed in the club of those who are looking for new and interesting “material “to listen to and why not, to be played.

Recensione di Tap Book of Angels Vol. 20 di Pat Metheny e John Zorn, Tzadik, 2013

Confesso di aver atteso questo disco con una certa impazienza, solleticato come ero dall'idea di sentire collaborare assieme due tra i miei musicisti preferiti in assoluto. E devo dire di essere stato ricompensato della pazienza, ma vediamo di capire un po’ di più il disco di cui stiamo parlando.
Apparentemente, ripeto apparentemente, John Zorn e Pat Metheny non sembrerebbero avere nulla di comune e quindi, sulla carta, questa collaborazione sembre rebbe impossibile. In realtà non è così.
John Zorn è al momento l’”american contemporary maverick”, compositore, improvvisatore , musicista, editore, imprenditore capace di aver realizzato alla soglia dei 60 anni una carriera semplicemente monumentale non solo in termini quantitativi (composizioni, discografia, libri realizzati) ma soprattutto in termini qualitativi per impegno, tenacia, creatività e indipendenza commerciale.
Pat Metheny non è da meno, quasi coetaneo di Zorn ha saputo costruirsi non solo una eccellente carriera ma anche uno dei suoni chitarristici più riconoscibili anche agli orecchi dei non intenditori. I meno informati lo ricordano soprattutto per i dischi realizzati col Pat Metheny Group dove fondeva in maniera equilibrata e accattivante jazz, musica brasiliana e melodica senza mai rinunciare a creatività e qualità. Ma Metheny ha anche un lato “oscuro”. Lavori come Electric Counterpoint di Steve Reich, il free jazz di Song x del 1985 realizzato con Ornette Coleman, il noise ossessivo Zero Tollerance for Silence, The Sign of the Four con Derek Bailey dimostrano come Metheny sia anche una persona che sa intelligentemente cercare nuove strade e percorsi al di fuori del comune e come sia sempre fortemente tentato dalle collaborazioni (vedi i lavori con Charlie Haden, John Scotfield, Nana Vasconcelos).
La notizia quindi che due persone così si tenessero sott’occhio da diversi anni non deve quindi particolarmente stupire, così come non devono stupire le reciproche attestazioni di stima, diciamo che forse il fuoco covava sotto la cenere e si aspettava l’occasione e il momento propizio.
Ed eccoci quindi arrivati a questo disco, ventesimo volume della serie Book of Angels, facenti parti del secondo “canzoniere” Masada, oltre trecento brani composti da Zorn e destinati ad essere interpretati da altri musicisti. I brani di Zorn devono aver esercitato il giusto richiamo su Pat Metheny e così ecco pronto questo Tap per sei brani dalla chiara impronta klezmer.
Metheny e Zorn non si sono sicuramente risparmiando mettendo sul fuoco tanta carne, forse troppa. Metheny si scatena dividendosi tra le sue chitarre, l’orchestrion (una delle sue recenti ossessioni) e tastiere varie, quasi volesse creare un seguito a quel Secret Story uscito più di vent’anni fa. Zorn crea per lui delle musiche dove poter lasciar libero spazio al tocco melodico di Pat mantenendo però la sua impronta di compositore.
Per me che li ascolto da … ormai 25 anni è una rincorsa generale a cogliere rimandi, citazioni, echi di due carriere eccezionali. Pat ce la mette tutta: melodico, distorto fa sentire che razza di chitarrista è e non rinuncia nel far capire tutto il peso della sua esperienza e della sua carriera e Zorn non deve essersi sicuramente tirato indietro.
Possiamo quindi gridare al miracolo? No, direi proprio di no, questo disco non aggiunge nulla di nuovo a quanto già sapevamo su Zorn e Metheny, chi si aspettava qualcosa di epocale, rimarrà sicuramente deluso. Chi invece si aspettava un bel disco ne sarà contento. I due non tradiscono e Tap è un bel disco. Ne consiglio sicuramente l’acquisto, sicuramente.
Speriamo che questo sia solo l’inizio. Speriamo che i due continuino a frequentarsi e che mettano in cantiere qualcosa di veramente innovativo, ho voglio di qualcosa tipo Spy versus Spy, The Big Countdown, piuttosto che Song X, Zero Tollerance for Silence .. insomma qualcosa di davvero nuovo e penso che i due ce la possano fare, non ci resta che aspettare e sperare.
Aggiungo solo i complimenti a Antonio Sanchez, da anni ormai batterista di fiducia di Pat, che come sempre conferma la sua bravura districandosi abilmente con precisione e pulizia esecutiva tra i poliritmi e i tempi dispari Zorniani.

Review of Peter Ablinger 33-127 by Seth Josel, Mode Records, 2009

The last discographic work for Seth Josel and Mode Records, printed some months ago is really a curious record from different points of view: first, the truly unusual number of tracks present, ninety-five! Secondly, this is a record where the guitar plays a very unusual role, either solo or in an ensemble, but rather as an interface in the exploration of sound by Peter Ablinger between reality and perception of reality, between the rational division of sound and "noise". In each of the 95 pieces that make up this cd you compare these two aspects in turn: gentle sounds from a simple musical scale played by Josel’s guitar contrasted with moments of pure noise produced by crossing the sounds of everyday urban life with sounds coming from an increasingly skewed and twisted guitar. The comparison is a few seconds of clear and precise sounds as irregulary opposed to spectral turbulent and chaotic rhythm and sounds. It 's the "Rauschen", the vision of sound, the noise by Ablinger: an idea almost monochromatic, without any possible symbolism, where the repetition, monotony, the error and density create and generate a new idea of space, near and in some ways contrary to the ideas of Brian Eno. Just a trick: put the CD in loop an let it run, after a while music will spread through the room like a perfume, like a smell and you will remark here to grasp a piece of clean sound, beyond a few seconds of noise and discovered that it never plays twice in the same way ... .. Somewhere in heaven, Derek Bailey listens and smiles.

The Marvelous Aphorisms of Gavin Bryars: The early Years, Ulrich Krueger and Seth Josel with various artist, Mode Records 2007

The word aphorism (literally "distinction" or "definition", from the Greek: φορισμός, aphorismós ap-horizein "from-to bound") denotes an original thought, spoken or written in a laconic and easily memorable form.. Wikipedia

Listening to this CD it soon becomes clear that Gavin Bryars, Seth josel and Ulrich Krieger have certainly no shortage of British sense of humor, here we have four compositions, made between 1970 and 1971, on various guitars and ensemble, all of them showing sometimes a little extravagant solutions. The first track, The Squirrel and the Ricketty-Racketty Bridge was originally written for Derek Bailey and included in his Solo Guitar Volume 1, 1971 and subsequently recorded for Oscure Brian Eno in 1978 with enforcing of Bryars, Eno and Fred Frith . The piece is for one guitarist and two guitars or multiples of this and here is performed with electric guitars by Seth josel. He plays an extremely clean version, different from the most rough Bailey’s version, but perhaps putting more in evidence the implacable counterpoint.

"1, 2, 1-2-3-4" of 1971 was also released in an earlier version on Obscure. This is in my opinion the best piece of CDs, about 33 minutes of music on interpolation of the Beatles songs. I am not a fan of the group of Liverpool but I liked a lot this piece! Imagine the presence of two electric guitars with hendrix attitude and acid vision like Jerry Garcia instead of Jerry Harrison and you will find yourself immersed in a colorful and intense trip, familiarity with the pieces will push you now to sing now to ask where you are finished, and the fun is assured.

Premiere recordings for both "Made in Hong Kong" and for Pre-Mediaeval Metrics, the first is piece for a toys for children that provides a number of conditions including that toys have to be given spontaneously by the children and only after that the musician has tell them the specific use that he want to do. The title recalls how the former British colony was in the past (certainly for my generation) the equivalent of what is now the “made in China”. The fourth piece of the CD is based on a couple of sentences arranged in four columns to eight pages, each sentence is composed of four symbols, the instrumentation is also free and each instrument can perform only one sound, all based on rhythm derived from the of poems in Latin. Fifteen minutes of sound almost austere, repetitive, to the limit of the obseessive.

I think this is a good record, the repertoire is not easy listening but accurately identifies a particular historical moment particularly fruitful for the English experimental music, the recording is excellent and the booklet accompanying the CD is very beautiful and with excellent photos. The musicians? No less than brilliant. For those who were looking to point out that the Mode Records is distributed in Italy by Stradivarius indipendent label.

Questa sera ascolteremo un progetto straordinario. Due anni fa il compositore/chitarrista/matematico/esperto di software Nick Didkovky ha comprato una chitarra elettrica usata per 100 dollari e l'ha fatta girare tra chitarristi ... spiriti a lui affini, sperimentatori della cara vecchia New York invitandoli a registrare un brano per una possibile compilation. Il risultato è andato oltre le più rose previsioni realizzando un doppio cd per la Bridge Record di David Starobin e coinvolgendo oltre 60 musicisti in una gara di generosità e creatività davvero senza eguali. Un esempio per tutti noi.

The result was beyond immagination making a double CD for the Bridge Record of David Starobin and involving more than 60 musicians in a competition of generosity and creativity that is unrivaled. An example for all of us.

I do not know if Seth Josel knows Talking Heads, and especially this song on the disc "Fear of Music” entitled Electric Guitar, because the lyrics marries particularly well with the music on this CD released in 2008 for the New York’s label New World Records and entirely dedicated to music composed exclusively for the electric guitar by six different composers in a period of time ranging from 1993 to 2005. The effort and the stylistic work expressed here by the american guitarist seems to be the will to assemble and record a repertoire of music specifically to the electric instrument giving it a dignity equal to that of classical instruments with specially designed pieces. So they are not provided transcriptions of music originally for other instruments, but strictly specific music that makes here use also of the various effects and pedals that are from more than 40 years the common heritage of all electric guitar players no matter the style below. The record starts with dreamy Until It Blaze by Eve Beglarian. Just over ten minutes of delicate melodic overlays generated by the delay effect until the final twisted crash, followed by the epic and melancholic Strum City I, II, III by Alvin Curran for 5 guitars and 2 bass guitars, 12 minutes of distorted Slapback by Michael Fiday, to the clusters of chords of the music that gives its name to the record, The Stroke that Kills by David Dramm, to the almost noise Stoned Guitar / TIG Welder by Gustavo Metamoros closing with the progressive Canon for Six Guitars of Tom Johnson. Certainly not an easy records and perhaps more accessible to those coming from the alternative rock instead of those who have studied in the Conservatory, but anyway this is surely an interesting, innovative record, that leaves many questions and ask to many answers and another test of skill and intelligence by Seth Josel: not everyone is able to play and want to risk like him!

29/05/2003: The Gnostic Preludes di John Zorn

John Zorn è un famoso compositore / improvvisatore /sassofonista newyorkese. I più lo conosceranno per i suoi lavori sulla musica ebraica con il progetto Masada e per il super-gruppo Naked City. Ma Zorn è tante cose assieme,un vero autore postmoderno in grado di miscelare tra loro stili, influenze, generi e idee completamente diverse. Ha scritto diverse cose per la chitarra e una delle più recenti è questo cd intitolato The Gnostic Preludes per trio (chitarra elettrica/arpa/vibrafono) che vede il gradito ritorno del grande Bill Frisell.

John Zorn is a famous composer / improviser / saxophonist from New York . Mostly known for his work on Jewish music with the project Masada and the super-group Naked City. But Zorn is so many things together, a true postmodern author capable of mixing between different styles, influences, genres and  ideas. He has written several things for the guitar and this is one of the latest CD called The Gnostic Preludes for trio (guitar / harp / vibraphone) which sees the welcomed return of the great Bill Frisell.

Eccellente chitarrista e musicista il Maestro Antonio Rugolo ha registrato il secondo volume per la Stradivarius delle musiche per sola chitarra del compositore argentino, ma di origini italiane, Guido Santorsola. Lo ascoltiamo con molto piacere su Guitars Speak, sembra che finalmente Guido Santorsola abbia trovato un degno campione e interprete per le sue bellissime musiche.

Excellent guitarist and musician Maestro Antonio Rugolo recorded the second volume for the Stradivarius of the music for solo guitar by the Argentine composer, but of Italian descent, Guido Santorsola. We will listen to him  on Guitars Speak, it seems that finally Guido Santorsola has found a worthy champion and interpreter for his beautiful music.

Il Maestro Stefano Grondona è tornato a registrare un nuovo cd con la Stradivarius. Dopo le recenti uscite sulle musiche di Llobet, Bach e Tarrega e dopo una lunga attesa di quasi 20 anni ha deciso di registrare musiche legate al repertorio contemporaneo. L'ha fatto con questo ottimo cd intitolato Nocturnal che questa sera ascolteremo in esclusiva su Guitars Speak.

Maestro Stefano Grondona is back with a new CD with the Stradivarius label. After the recent releases of music from Llobet, Bach and Tarrega and after a long wait of nearly 20 years he has decided to record music related to contemporary repertoire again. He did it with this excellent CD called Nocturnal, we will listen to it this night exclusively on Guitars Speak.

Marco Ramelli è un giovane chitarrista classico, classe 1984, che si è distinto vincendo numerose competizioni internazionali. Quest'anno è uscito il suo primo cd "Energico" che lo vede alla prese con un repertorio sia classico che contemporaneo. Un giovane talento che fa davvero ben sperare, lo ascolteremo alle prese anche con la Grand Sonata in La Maggiore di Nicolò Paganini.

Marco Ramelli is a young classical guitarist, born in 1984, who distinguished himself by winning many international competitions. This year he released his first CD "Energetico" in which he is struggling with  both classic and contemporary repertoire. A young talent , we will listen to him playing also the Grand Sonata in A Major by Nicolo Paganini.

Può sembrare strano ma sia nell'ambito della musica classica che in quella contemporanea si registra un vuoto per quanto riguarda il repertorio per duo chitarra classica e clarinetto. Un vuoto che è stato colmato dallo Spring in Duo, ovvero Alessandra Novaga (chitarra classica) e Maria Teresa Battistessa (clarinetto) con questo bel cd dal titolo inventato: Metissage. Una vera novità assoluta.

Sergi Boal è un chitarrista spagnolo, catalano di Barcellona. Dopo quattro anni di studi classici ha deciso di seguire un proprio personale percorso artistico a cavallo tra musica classica, jazz, tradizione catalana e improvvisazione radicale. Questa carriera si è sviluppata attraverso tre cd autoprodotti e realizzati, Nylons & Turtle, Silenci e il recente Cercle prodotto con le netlabels italiane Acustronica e AlchEmistica. Mercoledì sera li ascolteremo tutti su Guitars Speak.

Sergi Boal is a Spanish guitarist, from Barcelona. After four years of classical studies, he decided to follow his own personal artistic path in between classical music, jazz, Catalan tradition and radical improvisation. This career has developed through three self-produced  CDs  Nylons & Turtle,  Silenci and the recent Cercle realesed with Italian netlabels Acustronica and AlchEmistica. Confesso di aver sempre subito il fascino di una figura trasversale e "obliqua" come Brian Eno. Di recente sto notando una crescente attenzione da parte di esecutori di musica contemporanea nei confonti dei suoi lavori "ambient" targati anni '70. L'ensemble Icebreaker ha deciso di cimentarsi con una delle opere più belle di Eno, quella Apollo soundtrack realizzata per un documentario sui viaggi spaziali. Manuel Mota è un chitarrista portoghese, compositore ma soprattutto improvvisatore, da molti indicato come il degno erede di Derek Bailey. Il suo modo di suonare ricorda il modo di dipingere di certi monaci zen, una pennellata qua, un segno là, li vedi dipingere e non capisci cosa stiano facendo .. poi all'improvviso il dipinto si materializza davanti ai tuoi occhi, lasciandoti a bocca aperta. Manuel Mota suona la sua chitarra nello stesso modo rigoroso ma allo stesso tempo creativo.


Manuel Mota is a Portuguese guitarist, composer but above all improviser, by many people indicated as the worthy heir to Derek Bailey. His style of playing reminiscent of the way to paint of some Zen monks, a brushstroke here, a sign there, you see them paint and do not understand what they're doing .. then suddenly the painting materializes before your eyes, leaving you speechless. Michael Hedges è stato uno dei più grandi chitarristi acustici. Grande strumentista e innovatore ha concluso la sua strada in un tragico incidente automobilistico a 43 anni .. più di 15 anni fa. Lo ricordiamo con l'ascolto di uno dei suoi dischi più belli e rappresentativi, quel Aerial Boundaries che nel 1984 lo fece scoprire a tutto il mondo e che spostò in avanti i limiti del suo strumento.

Con questo disco Pablo Montagne si conferma essere uno dei chitarristi più interessanti in assoluto sulla scena della musica contemporanea. Questo suo nuovissimo “Cordale” uscito per la benemerita Setola di Maiale quest’anno, è un disco semplicemente eccezionale per idee, creatività, inventiva e attitudine al rischio. Si tratta di diciassette composizioni, le prime dieci per chitarra classica e le restanti sette per chitarra acustica, caratterizzate dallo “sviluppo di linee melodiche e ritmi autogenerati, i ritmi mutevoli, le melodie mutevoli, texture brulicanti”. L’obiettivo di Montagne è di generare un materiale sonoro indipendente (per quanto possibile) dallo stesso strumentista attraverso la combinazione di varie procedure... “un po' come cercare di 'sorprendere la propria ombra'” come scrive lo stesso Pablo nel sito di Setola di Maiale.

Incomincia in maniera quasi innocente questo cd, diversi secondi di suoni tenui e impalpabili, quasi glitch sfocati in lontananza, costringono a elevare la soglia dell’attenzione,a guardare il minutaggio sul lettore, a chiedersi se non sia il caso di alzare il volume … questa sera su Guitars Speak ascoltiamo il primo disco del quartetto di chitarre elettriche Dither, siamo a tutta avangarde cerebrale ma non radical chic, niente salotti buoni, ma tanto feedback. Solo buona nuova musica!

24/10/2012: J.S.. Bach Suites for Guitar di Luigi Attademo

Non c’è niente da fare. Prima o poi lo devi affrontare, devi affrontare la sua musica, definire delle trascrizioni/traduzioni, cercarne lo spirito, indagare la massa e la sua struttura sonora. Da Bach non si scappa, a distanza di secoli questo compositore non cessa mai di stupire nè di cessare la sua opera di "attrattore musicale". La sua musica è sicuramente alla portata della chitarra classica di Luigi Attademo, che anche lui ammaliato, ha voluto realizzare questo doppio cd per la Brilliant (casa discografica che ci ha ormai abituato a una discreta e costante attenzione verso il nostro strumento preferito).  

Attademo è un musicista dalla solida preparazione e ne da abbondante dimostrazione mentre si muove con disinvoltura all’interno di Preludi, Sarabande, Bourre e Gavotte, mostrando non solo competenza e perizia, ma anche una piacevole vena melodica.

There is nothing to do. Sooner or later you have to deal with him, you have to face his music, dive inside sets  of transcriptions / translations, look for his spirit, investigate the sonic mass and texture. From Bach you can not escape, after centuries this composer never ceases to amaze nor to cease his duty as a great "musical attractor".  His music can definitely deal with theclassical guitar of Luigi Attademo, charmed by this music, wanted to make this double CD for Brilliant (a record label that has become accustomed to a fair and constant attention to our favorite instrument).
Attademo is a musician with a  solid preparation and he gives proof as he moves with ease within Preludes, Sarabande, Gavotte and Bourre, showing not only skill and expertise, but also a pleasant melodic vein.

Marco Tabellini (in arte MTabe) è un chitarrista elettrico ben conosciuto dai lettori del Blog Chitarra e Dintorni Nuove Musiche per le sue improvvisazioni uscite con la casa discografica indipendente Setola di Maiale e la netlabel AlchEmistica. Come altri maestri dell'improvvisazione in questo suo nuovo cd passa anche lui alla chitarra acustica e la cosa non poteva lasciare tracce sul suo stile già così asciutto e minimale.Rispetto ai suoi lavori elettrici si avverte un maggiore avvicinamento alle idee di John Fahey: M Tabe suona un blues astratto e materico, ritmicamente più ricco e fantasioso e con una maggiore vena melodica.

Marco Tabellini (aka MTabe) is an electric guitar player well known to the readers of Blog Chitarra e Dintorni Nuove Musiche for his improvisations produced with independent record label Setola di Maiale and  AlchEmistica netlabel. Like other masters of improvisation in his new cd he decided to play an acoustic guitar and it could not leave traces on his style already so dry and minimal. Compared to his electrical work we can feel a greater closeness to the ideas of John Fahey: M Tabe plays an abstract and material blues, rhythmically richer and with more imaginative and more melodic vein.

Li ascoltiamo suonare questa sera le musiche del compositore Jan Novàk, si tratta di dieci Divertimenti pubblicati tramite la netlabel Parafonica e liberamente ascoltabili e scaricabili da internet. Questi sui dieci Divertimenti, pubblicati 37 anni fa, ben testimoniano la passione di Novàk per la letteratura classica e il latino con il loro carattere melodico e elegiaco. Tonolli Mauro and Matteo Rigotti are the two guitarists that form the Duo Lumen. This night we will listen them playing the music of composer Jan Novák, ten Divertimenti published by the netlabel Parafonica and and freely downloadable and listening in internet. These Divertimenti, published 37 years ago, well represent and witness to the passion of Novak for classical literature and Latin with their melodic and elegiac character. The Duo Lumen interprets them in a masterly way by highlighting all their musical colors and their melodic vein. La prima puntata di quest'anno non poteva iniziare che con un omaggio a un grande chitarrista: Julian Bream. Bream è uno dei giganti della chitarra classica e la recente ristampa di alcuni suoi concerti registrati all'inizio degli anni '60 rappresenta la giusta occasione per parlare di lui e ascoltare la sua splendida chitarra. Si tratta dei seguenti: Concerto in La per Chitarra e Orchestra di Mauro Giuliani, Guitar Concerto Op. 67 di Malcom Arnold, la Sonatina Op. 51 di Lennox Berkeley, , la Pavane pour une Infante défunte di Ravel, Segovia Op. 29 di Roussel, la Sonata in Do minore e la Sonata in La di Cimarosa. Si tratta di quindi di musiche già da tempo presenti sul mercato ma non facilmente reperibili. Siamo nel 1960, Bream è in splendida forma e si esprime al meglio, sentirlo suonare è sempre una grande gioia e una grande emozione.

The first episode of this year could not have started without a tribute to a great guitarist like Julian Bream. Bream is one of the giants of classical guitar and the recent reissue of some of his concerts recorded at the beginning of the '60 is the right opportunity to talk to him and listen to his beautiful guitar. We will listen to: Concerto in A for Guitar and Orchestra by Mauro Giuliani Guitar Concerto Op 67 by Malcolm Arnold, the Sonatina Op 51 by Lennox Berkeley, the Pavane pour une Infante dead by Ravel, Roussel Segovia Op 29 , the Sonata in C minor and the Sonata in A by Cimarosa. These are musics that have long been on the market but not readily available. We are in 1960, Bream is in great shape and is at his best, to hear him play is always a great joy and a thrill.
