-Recent article in Philadelphia Music Makers Magazine that speaks of the work that our founder and director, Karen Lauria Saillant has been doing to create new Italian operas, based on Shakespeare, in Italy for the past 4 years. http://www.philamusicmakers.com/saillant.htm
Background of International Opera Theater, Inc (American Non Profit Corporation since 2005)
Mission: To bring artists of diverse cultures together to create new works of art, especially operas and especially in the Italian language. These works are usually based on Shakespeare. They are created through a process of self discovery that allows the artists, as well as the audience, to let down their defenses and feel.
Highlights
-2004: International Opera Theater creates first new opera, in Citta' della Pieve, Italy, in Italian, based on Shakespeare.Karen Saillant, director, uses improvisation, movement exercises and austrahlung, or emanations, (described by Sir Charles Mackerras as the only way to transmit large volumes of information without speaking) to enable the operatic actors to have spontaneous voices as they organize themselves on stage in the same intuitive manner in which we all organize ourselves in daily life.http://www.internationaloperatheater.com/desktop6_031.htm-
-2005: Il racconto d'inverno, based on Shakespere's The Winter's Tale. Mi-kyoung Lee, head of fiber arts department at University of the Arts in Philadelphia, designs costumes from trash bags, pipe cleaners, thousands of white tissue paper rose buds, http://www.internationaloperatheater.com/desktop6_144.htm bags from Tower Record's Store, Macy's and Whole Foods Supermarkethttp://www.internationaloperatheater.com/desktop6_138.htm and other mundane objects with assistance of 12 fiber art interns from The University of the Arts. This begins permanent collaboration with Mi-Kyoung and University of the Arts. http://www.internationaloperatheater.com/desktop6_129.htm
Karen Saillant, director of IOT, continues to incorporate 20 foot pieces of fabric into staginghttp://www.internationaloperatheater.com/desktop6_133.htm
-2006: La Tempesta, based on The Tempest. Costumes, as well as backdrop, are designed by Mi-Kyoung, and executed by fiber artists: created out of string, twine, ribbon, strips of panty hose, rubber bands and fabric.http://www.internationaloperatheater.com/desktop6_012.htm
-2007: Collaboration with Philadelphia Orchestra on new Commedia dell'Arte interpretation of The Pulcinella Suite by Igor Stravinsky for 150th anniversary of The Academy of Music, the oldest opera house in America.
