Review of A.Scarlatti Chlori , Nymph and Lover Arias & Cantatas , Stradivarius 2013

It's a few years now that the Scarlatti family is in the news regarding the world of the classical six-string guitar, in particular the compositions for harpsichord by Domenico Scarlatti have often been transcribed with considerable success , refreshing the classical repertoire, always a little cramped around its tight boundaries.

This CD instead is mainly dedicated to the figure of his father, Alessandro Scarlatti, brilliant composer and to the transcriptions for archlute , baroque guitar , theorbo and voice of some of his operas and cantatas. To engage in this enterprise, recently released by the independent italian record label Stradivarius, we have Matteo Mela and Lorenzo Micheli , Massimo Lonardi and the voice of Renata Fusco.The CD begins and ends with " a sparkling symphony borrowed " from the opera La Principessa Fedele, while the centerpiece of this record is given by the youth opera, composed only eighteen years old, Gli Equivoci del Sembiante, work of considerable success , recovery from numerous productions. Always by Alessandro Scarlatti we find alos two his chamber cantatas : Rosiguolo and Cantata di Lontananza.Talking about Scarlatti’s family in the cd we find also the Sonata for harpsichord K81 composed by his son Domenico .This is a truly remarkable cd for the skill of the musicians involved and the beauty of the transcriptions, recorded in Stradivarius’s sound perfect style , with a very nice and interesting booklet that accompanies it with texts written by Lorenzo Micheli to which we shall ask him when he will decide to write a book, any book he would like to write, about guitar. One of the finest records of 2013.

Sono alcuni anni ormai che la famiglia Scarlatti è all’onore delle cronache per quanto riguarda il mondo della sei corde classica, in particolare le composizioni per clavicembalo di Domenico Scarlatti sono state più volte trascritte con notevole successo, rinfrescando il repertorio classico, da sempre un po’ angusto.

Questo cd invece è principalmente dedicato alla figura del padre, Alessandro Scarlatti, brillante compositore e alle trascrizioni per arciliuto, chitarra barocca, tiorba e voce di alcune sue opere teatrali e cantate.  A cimentarsi in questa impresa, uscita di recente per la casa discografica indipendente italiana Stradivarius, sono Matteo Mela, Lorenzo Micheli, Massimo Lonardi e la voce Renata Fusco.

Il cd inizia e si conclude con “una scintillante sinfonia presa in prestito” dall’opera La Principessa Fedele, mentre il fulcro del disco è dato dalle arie tratte dall’opera giovanile, composta a soli diciotto anni, Gli Equivoci del Sembiante, opere di notevole successo, ripresa da numerose produzioni. Sempre di Alessandro Scarlatti trovano posto due sue cantate da camera: Rosiguolo e Cantata di Lontananza.

Il cd si completa con la sonata per clavicembalo K81 composta dal figlio Domenico.

Cd davvero notevole sia per la bravura dei musicisti impegnati che per la bellezza delle trascrizioni, suono in perfetto stile Stradivarius, molto bello e interessante il libretto che lo accompagna con testi curati da Lorenzo Micheli a cui dovremo chiedere quando si deciderà a scrivere un testo, qualsiasi testo vorrà scrivere, sulla chitarra. Uno dei dischi più belli del 2013.

I am writing this review on a February rainy day, looking for a little distraction from the dullness that offers the “winter of our discontent “. Even the cover of this Metamorphoses evokes coldness , loneliness, in the blinding white of a snow storm , I have the desire for something that could warm me up and make me hope for the early spring which I know is still far away but I want soon to see and enjoy .What better than seeking shelter in music?And so here we are to enjoy the arrangements of Mauro Giuliani, Emilio Pujol , Ida Presti, Alexandre Lagoya and Miguel Llobet and the music of Isaac Albeniz , Claude Debussy, Rossini , Enrique Granados, Johann Sebastian Bach and Maurice Ravel .We know Matteo Mela and Lorenzo Micheli very well over these years of blogging, they do not make mistakes when they play, they can extract from their instruments poetry and emotions without indulging in melismas or other subterfuges. And with their personal record label Solaria they well know how to give us moments of joy that take away the tedium of this rainy winter .Their excellent performances are underlined by the quality of their recording label that emphasizes both the romantic and lyrical tone of their music, both the colors of their guitars , giving a warm and "full" of harmonics sound that fills my room chasing away my melancholy ghosts .Let’s play it again, it's raining outside, but who cares ?

Scrivo questa recensione in una piovosa giornata di febbraio, cercando un po’ di distrazione dal grigiore che offre l’inverno del nostro scontento. Anche la copertina di questo Metamorphoses evoca freddo, solitudine, nel bianco accecante di una bufera di neve, ho il desiderio di qualcosa che mi riscaldi e che mi faccia sperare presto per la primavera che so essere ancora lontana ma che spero presto di vedere e godere.
Cosa di meglio che non cercare un riparo nella musica?
E così eccoci qui a godere gli arrangiamenti di Mauro Giuliani, Emilio Pujol, Ida Presti, Alexandre Lagoya e  Miguel Llobet delle musiche di Isaac Albeniz, Claude Debussy, Gioacchino Rossini, Enrique Granados, Johann Sebastian Bach e Maurice Ravel.
Matteo Mela e Lorenzo Micheli abbiamo imparato a conoscerli in questi anni di blog, quando suonano non sbagliano, sanno estrarre dai loro strumenti poesia e emozioni senza lasciarsi andare a melismi o a altro sotterfugi.  E nella concentrazione e nella libertà che si sono creati nella loro casa discografica personale Solaria sanno regalare attimi di gioia che allontanano il tedio di questo inverno piovoso.
Le loro eccellenti interpretazioni sono sottolineate dalla qualità della loro incisione discografica che accentua sia i toni romantici e lirici delle musiche sia i colori delle loro chitarre regalando un suono caldo e “pieno” di armoniche che riempie la mia stanza scacciando i miei fantasmi malinconici.
Ancora un giro sul cd, fuori piove, ma che importa?

Mario Castelnuovo Tedesco è stato un importante compositore italiano, di origini ebraiche, fuggito dal nostro paese e emigrato nel 1939 negli USA a seguito delle ben note persecuzioni razziali fasciste. Nel 1953 legge il poema Morning in Iowa di Robert G. Nathan e si innamora di quel senso dello spazio e della sua epica. Decide di metterlo in musica per un ensemble per Voce, Accordion, Banjo, Clarinetto, Contrabbasso, Percussioni. Questo poema è stato un po' dimenticato .. finché il chitarrista Lorenzo Micheli decide di eseguirlo e inciderlo su cd .. questa sera lo ascolteremo su Radio Voce della Speranza.

In 1953, he read the poem Morning in Iowa by Robert G. Nathan and falled in love with the his sense of space and epic. He decides to put it to music for an ensemble for Voice, Accordion, Banjo, Clarinet, Bass, Percussion. This poem was ... a little bit forgotten .. until the guitarist Lorenzo Micheli decided to play it and record it on cd .. tonight will hear it on Radio Voce della Speranza.
