Ryland Peter Cooder, più noto come Ry Cooder, (Santa Monica, 15 marzo1947), è un chitarrista e compositore statunitense. Oltre ad essere celebre per la sua notevole tecnica alla chitarra slide, Cooder è noto soprattutto per una serie di album in cui ha esplorato vari generi della musica americana "delle radici". In questa puntata lo ascoltiamo nella veste di compositore di colonne sonore.

Besides being famous for its remarkable technique on slide guitar, Cooder is best known for a series of albums in which he explored various genres of American "roots" music. In this episode we listen to him as a soundtracks composer.

Guitars Speak: le chitarre della Mahavishnu Orchestra

Costituitasi nel 1971 e disciolta nel 1976, la Mahavishnu Orchestra fu creata dal chitarrista John McLaughlin e dalbatterista Billy Cobham, entrambi riconosciuti come strumentisti di valore assoluto, e chiamati nel corso del tempo a collaborare ad esperienze musicali di grande valore da maestri come Miles Davis. La potenza tecnica ed il feeling della band ne fecero uno dei gruppi di riferimento del genere fusion.

The band's original lineup featured "Mahavishnu" John McLaughlin on acoustic and electric guitars, with members Billy Cobham on drums, Rick Laird on bass guitar, Jan Hammer on electric and acoustic piano and synthesizer, and Jerry Goodman on violin. This first incarnation of the ensemble was a multinational group: McLaughlin is from Yorkshire, England; Cobham from Panama; Hammer from Prague, Czechoslovakia; Goodman from Chicago, Illinois; and Laird from Dublin, Ireland. This group was considered an important pioneer in the jazz fusion movement

Guitars Speak: la chitarra di Blind Willie Johnson

Download Podcast Blind Willie Johnson è stato uno dei più grandi interpreti del gospel della musica americana e uno dei più grandi virtuosi della chitarra slide. La sua è stata una vita intensa e travagliata: all'età di quattro anni perse la madre e all'età di cinque anni costruì una chitarra da una scatola di sigari, divenne cieco a sette anni quando la matrigna dopo un litigio con il padre gli lanciò dell'acido solforico negli occhi, rendendolo cieco. È annoverato tra i maggiori interpreti del bottleneck e del gospel nel periodo della grande depressione.

Blind Willie Johnson was a gospel blues singer and guitarist. While the lyrics of his songs were usually religious, his music drew from both sacred and blues traditions. It is characterized by his slide guitar accompaniment and tenor voice, and his frequent use of a lower-register 'growl' or false bass voice. Johnson was not born blind. Although it is not certain how he lost his sight, his alleged widow Angeline Johnson told Samuel Charters that when Willie was seven his father beat his stepmother after catching her going out with another man; and that she in spite blinded young Willie by throwing lye in his face. He is counted among the greatest interpreters of bottleneck and the gospel styles during the great depression.

Mercoledì sera ascolteremo "Deconstruction" l'ultimo disco autoprodotto del chitarrista acustico italiano Pino Forastiere, Diplomato in chitarra classica al Conservatorio Santa Cecilia di Roma, nei primi anni di attività si è esibito con la chitarra a sei e a dieci corde con repertorio barocco, contemporaneo e originale, per poi passare definitivamente alla chitarra acustica nel 1999, anno del suo debutto discografico con l'album Overcrossing in duo con il chitarrista classico Luca Pagliani. Il critico jazz statunitense John Schaefer ha definito il suo stile come un mix tra i ritmi di Steve Reich, la tecnica di Michael Hedges con un'ammirazione per Eddie Van Halen.

Wednesday evening we will listen to "Deconstruction" the last album made by the Italian acoustic guitarist Pino Forastiere, classical guitar trained at the Conservatorio Santa Cecilia in Rome, in his early years, he performed with the six- and ten-string guitar, with baroque repertoire, contemporary and original, before moving permanently to the acoustic guitar in 1999, the year of his recording debut with the album Overcrossing in duo with classical guitarist Luca Pagliani. The American jazz critic John Schaefer called his style as "something like a mix of Steve Reich’s interlocking rhythmic patterns meet Michael Hedges’s  techniques, all while admiring Eddie van Halen."

Guitars Speak: la chitarra classica di Giacomo Susani

Mercoledì sera ascolteremo il debutto discografico del padovano Giacomo Susani, 20 anni, tra i più talentuosi chitarristi classici italiani. Susani si è avvicinato allo strumento a soli 7 anni, e da allora ha collezionato successi e riconoscimenti nei maggiori concorsi. Diplomato nel 2013 al Conservatorio Pedrollo di Vicenza, ha studiato con il Maestro Stefano Grondona ed è il primo italiano entrato nel prestigioso Julian Bream Trust. Per Stradivarius, Susani ha inciso questo ottimo cd con brani di Johann Sebastian Bach e Sylvius Leopold Weiss, Goffredo Petrassi e Alexandre Tansman.

Wednesday evening we will listen to  the recording debut by the italian classical guitar player Giaocmo Susani, 20 years old, one of the most talented italian classical guitarists. Susani approached his instrument just 7 years old, and has since racked up success and awards at major competitions. Graduated in 2013 at the Conservatorio Pedrollo in Vicenza, he studied with Maestro Stefano Grondona and is the first Italian entered the prestigious Julian Bream Trust. For Stradivarius, Susani has recorded this excellent CD with works by Johann Sebastian Bach and Sylvius Leopold Weiss, Goffredo Petrassi and Alexandre Tansman.

Oscar Marcelo Alemán è stato un chitarrista jazz argentino. Amico, rivale e collega del grande Django Reinhardt, conquistò Parigi negli anni '30 come chitarrista e leader della band di Josephin Baker. Caratterizzato da una tecnica personale e da uno swing irresistibile Aleman è stato uno dei grandi chitarristi dell'epoca d'oro dello swing a Parigi. Fuggito dalla Francia dopo l'invasione tedesca del 1940 tornò in Argentina, dove continuò la sua carriera, lontano però dall'attenzione internazionale.

Oscar Marcelo Alemán was an Argentine jazz guitarist, singer, dancer and entertainer. began playing guitar as a teenager in Argentina and in the late '20s, he moved to Europe, Spain at first. By 1931, he was living in Paris and during 1933-1935, he was a regular member of Freddy Taylor's Swing Men From Harlem. Alemán appeared on records with trumpeter Bill Coleman and clarinetist Danny Polo and was the leader on eight selections from 1938-1939. He moved back to Argentina in 1941 and, although he recorded as late as 1974, few outside of his native country have ever heard of him.

This Wednesday I will tell you the story of Lonnie Johnson, in my radio program "Guitars Speak".Alonzo "Lonnie" Johnson was an American blues and jazz singer/guitarist, violinist and songwriter who pioneered the role of jazz guitar and jazz violin, and is recognized as the first to play an electrically-amplified violin. Lonnie Johnson pioneered the single-string solo guitar styles that we are accustomed to hearing today in rock, blues and jazz music.

È stata una delle grandi del blues, il suo blues è radicato nel country blues piuttosto che nel blues classico ma fu la prima donna a darsi al blues elettrico contribuendo così alla nascita del blues urbano di tipico di Chicago, detto appunto Chicago blues.

Wednesday evening I will be "on air" with Lizzie Douglas's guitar. Known as Memphis Minnie, was a blues guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter whose recording career lasted from the 1920s to the 1950s. She recorded around 200 songs, some of the best known being "Bumble Bee", "Nothing in Rambling", and "Me and My Chauffeur Blues". Her performances and songwriting made her well known in a genre dominated mostly by men.

Guitars Speak; The Allman Brothers Band Live At Fillmore East

La storia ci dice che il disco At Fillmore East venne registrato nel corso di tre serate (l'11, 12, e 13 marzo 1971) svoltesi a New York City nel locale Fillmore East di proprietà del promoter Bill Graham. Il 27 giugno, il Fillmore East chiuse definitivamente i battenti, e la band fu invitata a suonare nel corso del concerto finale di commiato. Finalmente nell’ottobre 2014 tutte queste registrazioni sono state raccolte in un eccezionale cofanetto di 6 cd con tutte le registrazioni integrali. Considerato da molti uno dei più bei live della storia della musica, in queste registrazioni gli Allman Brothers danno il meglio di sé proponendo la loro miscela di rock, blues e jazz con una forza e intensità incredibili.

History tells us that the At Fillmore East record was recorded over three nights (11, 12, and 13 March 1971) held in New York City in the Fillmore East owned by promoter Bill Graham. On June 27, the Fillmore East finally closed its doors, and the band was invited to play in the final farewell concert. Finally in October 2014 all of these recordings have been collected in a unique 6 cds box set with all the complete recordings. Considered by many one of the best live in music history, in these recordings the Allman Brothers give the best of themselves offering their blend of rock, blues and jazz with an incredible strength and intensity.

Nonostante la brevità della sua carriera, Emily Remler rappresenta un'eccezione nel campo del jazz dove pochissime chitarriste hanno raggiunto alti livelli, a differenza di altri generi come la musica classica. Se ne è andata a 32 anni, il 4 maggio 1990, a causa di un attacco di cuore. In questi anni la sua figura è stata un po' dimenticata, io credo sia giusto ricordarla raccontando la sua storia qui, su Guitars Speak.

Despite the brevity of her career, Emily Remler is an exception in jazz guitar where very few guitarists have reached high levels, unlike other genres such as classical music. She died at age 32, May 4, 1990, due to a heart attack. In recent years her figure was a little forgotten, I think it's time to remember her by telling her story here, on Guitars Speak radio program

Blind Lemon Jefferson, è stato un cantante e chitarrista statunitense di musica blues. Capostipite della scena blues mondiale, fu il primo chitarrista e cantante country blues della scena texana ad incidere una registrazione, nel dicembre 1925. Come indicato dal suo soprannome "blind" ("cieco") era non vedente. Conosciuto anche con il soprannome di "Padre del Texas Blues", fu uno dei bluesman di maggior successo commerciale degli anni '20, e uno tra i più importanti ed influenti della storia.

Blind Lemon Jefferson, was an American bules singer and guitarist. Founder of the blues scene, he was the first country blues guitarist and singer on the Texan scene to be recorded in December 1925. As indicated by his nickname "Blind", he is also known as the "Father of Texas Blues", he was one of the most commercially successful bluesman in the '20s, and one of the most important and influential in blues history.

Muore nel sonno la mattina del 10 dicembre 2013 all'età di 83 anni il grande Jim Hall. Hall è stato uno dei grandi maestri della chitarra jazz, virtuoso elegante ma mai eccessivo, espressivo senza mai essere inutilmente mieloso, uno dei più seguiti e apprezzati strumentisti jazz. Rendiamo giustamente omaggio al suo grande talento con una puntata a lui interamente dedicata.

He died in his sleep on the morning of December 10, 2013 at the age of 83 years, the great Jim Hall. Hall was one of the great masters of jazz guitar, an elegant but never excessive virtuoso, expressive without being unnecessarily honeyed, one of the most popular and appreciated jazz instrumentalists. We rightly tribute to his great talent with an episode devoted entirely to him.

Big Bill Broonzy, nato William Lee Conley Broonzy (Scott, 26 giugno 1893– Chicago, 15 agosto 1958), è stato un compositore e chitarrista blues statunitense. Con la sua lunga e varia carriera, è considerato una delle figure chiave del blues del ventesimo secolo, e in genere è ricordato, come uno tra i bluesman più grandi di sempre, facendo da anello di congiunzione tra il blues rurale delle origini e il blues urbano delle grandi città.

Big Bill Broonzy, born William Lee Conley Broonzy (Scott, June 26th 1893- Chicago, August 15, 1958) was an American blues guitarist and composer. With his long and varied career, he is considered one of the key figures of the blues of the twentieth century, and in general he is remembered as one of the greatest bluesmen of all time, a real link between the rural blues of the origins and the electric blues of the big cities.
