That's All Folks: The music by Carl Stalling first part

There is a composer we all know. We know him very well, since we were children and we present him, almost every day, to our children, almost unconsciously. He walks closet to us from several years, discreet, so impalpable as brilliant his music has been that we continue to listen to unconsciously and to whistled in every country, in every latitude, beyond all musical and cultural globalization. There is a music that we always like to listen to that always makes us smile because it anticipates a world of fantastic and brilliant schizophrenic characters: I think it’s less than ten seconds, and it is always the same one from sixty years, but I always enjoy it as the first time. It’s the intro music opening the Warner Bros’ cartoons and I’m sure it’s already bouncing in your heads.
This music is by Carl Stalling (1891-1972), a brilliant american composer who has linked his name almost only to cartoons soundracks: first with Walt Disney, for only two years at the beginning of the soundtrack era, and then with the gold season of RoadRunner, Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, all the crazy looney gang that we all know (one of the reasons why I think we lucky lucky to live in these times).
Born in the small town of Lexington, Missouri, the young Stalling got his first contact with music playing an old piano toy. In 1903, at the tender age of 5 years, he saw "the Great train Robbery" in a tent and from then he was determined as his own words show "to be close to the world of films in every way and any cost ". Seven years later he became the pianist of the local films’ producer in his city, in an old bulding with a designer only, in which Stalling played during the changing of film also. In the early'20s, Stalling directed his orchestra and improvised on Iris Theater’s organ in Kansas City where he met Walt Disney that decided to order him two pieces for two short Mickey Mouse’s movies, a character who at those times had appeared only in a previous cartoon.
In Hollywood, at Disney’s studio recently built, Stalling gave birth to a cinematic revolution giving the breath of life to inanimate characters through his music. In this sense Stalling was one of the most revolutionary and visionary authors in American music, especially if one considers his time’s design . Following the logical view of the action on screen rather than the traditional musicale rules and formal metrics (development, theme and variations, etc..) Stalling managed to create a composition entirely based on the flow of images on the screen, for the fist time in music history.
At first listen, Stalling’s immense musical talent impresses with its traumatic capacity (taken and developed by John Zorn) to resume and mix together different and heterogeneous musical elements interrupting the flow of music with constant changes and changes of direction, through a constantly changing kaleidoscope of different styles, forms, melodies, quotations, pieces for piano for silent movies in Kansas City elevating them to a science value with Disney and to an artistic performance with Warner Bros.
Stalling’s results become even more impressive if you consider that its songs played against everything that was happening in the music of that era, the years between'30 and'40, just think names that filled those years:
  • Copland,
  • Cage begins to explore the possibilities of the piano’s sound,
  • the music of Satie,
  • Harry Partch’s music built with his own tools based on his opwn pitch theory,
  • the balanced improvisations of Ellington and his compositions based on the swing,
  • the be-bop of Charlie Panker and Dizzy Gillespie
  • E. Varese.
It was a period ruled by the American conservative Impressionism pervaded by the desire to search for new sources and Stalling was without doubt one of the most extremist composers of the period. A pioneer who made us walking gently, with the innocence and lightness of cartoons, thorough a new fantastic universe, pervaded by all possible humor to the most subtle, shocking and exaggerated musical effects. A world where Willie the Coyote tries to get the evil RoadRunner, defying all physic’s laws, where Bugs Bunny terrorises the poor Taddeo with surreal sadism and the nevrotic Daffy Duck tries to catch Speedy Gonzales, the fastest mouse of Messico.
Disney and Iwerks idea was to modify old products and launching them through the new soundtrack tecnology: so Oswald The Lucky Rabbit was turned into Mickey Mouse, allowing him the use of the voice on 18 November 1928. At this time Stalling was working behind the scenes giving his fundamental contribution creating the music for the old Disney’s cartoons and it seems that in a couple of occasions he was even the voice of Mickey Mouse. Thank to him "Silly Simphonies" were born, some particularly cured animations in which music played a prominent role, as in the exceptional "Skeleton Dance": the cartoon shows the midnight concert of a group of skeletons in a cemetery.

Review of " @" by Thurston Moore and John Zorn , Tzadik 2013

How nice to see them play together these two “eternal guys”, the giant Moore and the bespectacled Zorn, both smiling on the obi that accompanies the CD . What I have hoped for a long time at least it happened: the best of the underground New York after years of close and not always easy cohabitation meet and play together . As a fan of both Zorn and Sonic Youth I have coveted this collaboration, I say it now so you already know that I love this cd .

I like it, yes, but I would not recommend it at all. I only recommend to:

1 ) Zorn and Sonic’s fanatics like me ;

2 ) those who want to listen to an unparalleled combination between sax and electric guitar.

The other please refrain . And this is why:

1 ) this CD does not add anything new to the discographies of these two illustrious personages . They sound like they have always played , so this record is absolutely indispensable only for a fan of strict observance . For those wishing to get to know these two gentlemen there are other titles of their long discography that must obtain before .

2 ) It ' a great record . Forget about who is playing and listen to with ears as much as possible " virgins." It ' a record about improvisations , played with great skill and consummate craft by two experts in the field in a combination (saxophone and guitar ) not exactly easy to find on the market. These two have a great interplay , they are good , consummate professionals and do not hold back.  Sure, I agree Zorn is 60 years old and Moore 55 , certainly are no more kids and the anger and the fury expressed in the '80s has long evaporated in favor of a skilled pro. So if you are expecting some surprises or Copernican revolutions : Zorn is always Zorn and Moore is always Moore.
But let me also say that , but what the hell we want more from these two? They are on the scene from a long time , have been and are two real cultural and artistic engines and continue to do their part with always steadfast , genuine and sincere enthusiasm. Without them, underground New York would be more sad, grunge would never have taken off and we would be orphans of so many beautiful music .

So what? Long life to "@ " , long life to passageslike For Derek and Evan Moore and long life to Zorn, Moore and Tzadik, long life to these two incorrigible characters to whom I’m genuinely and honestly fond and that I have never been disappointed.

Thanks again "boys" .. thanks for the example , thank you for your passion and for the example that has always given. Criticize you ? Let them do as well. This record is the perfect tribute to your consistency and artistic ethics.

1) i fanatici dei Sonic e di Zorn, come me;

p.s. chiedo scusa per l' "eterni ragazzi" messo all'inizio .. ogni riferimento a Gianni Morandi è assolutamente escluso a priori. Senza offesa, neanche per Gianni.

Review - Alessandra Novaga’s Book of Heads by John Zorn at O’, Milano

Review - Alessandra Novaga’s Book of Heads by John Zorn at O’, Milano
By Mario Mariotti
info@mariomariotti.eu

On Monday March 27 John Zorn's “The Book of Heads” was performed for the first time in Italy in its entirety at Spazio O'Artoteca in Milan. The 1978 work consists of 35 studies for guitar – or, rather, for five different guitars (acoustic archtop, solid body, classical, dobro, and semi-hollow body) and several objects – and it's dedicated to one of Zorn's historical collaborators: guitarist Eugene Chadbourne. This is how Zorn talks about his music from that period, including BoH: In my early pieces – say the one I did in Richard Foreman’s loft, in January ’75 – I would be playing saxophone, for example, improvising a duet with someone who was peeling a cabbage, but the sound of peeling a cabbage was just as important and “orchestrated” for that sound, just as much as the sight of the performer standing up a ladder, peeling a cabbage. So that, in those early pieces, the sound resulting from the visual event was still formally present, in my mind. The artist responsible for the piece's performance in Milan is guitarist Alessandra Novaga who showed, along with great virtuosity, a wonderful theatrical and “scenic” flair. Zorn's brilliant 35 studies invite the audience to a journey through sound, gesture, and instrument, in which the guitar dematerializes and becomes “concept”, losing itself in the qualities and differences between the many kinds of instruments necessary for the performance of the piece. The cycle deploys to its maximum the expressive potential of the instruments, adding to the canonical plectrum and pizzicato techniques actions such as the rubbing of balloons on the strings, the use of bows, the insertion of objects between the strings (wooden sticks, nail files, strips of fabric, and clothespins), the use of various pedals, a talking doll, the rhythmic explosion of balloons in unison with guitar chords often at the end of a study, and the fascinating upward swing of the guitar's sound box during a resonating chord, producing something very close to a wha-wha sound effect in an entirely acoustic fashion. All these techniques were brilliantly mastered during the Milan performance, and they were highly appreciated by the audience – especially in their more theatrical aspects and where they willfully invited fun. Last but not least, one should not fail to mention the wonderful melodic fragments emerging at various points from the performance's kaleidoscopic texture of noises and sounds. A big cheer to Alessandra Novaga for bringing to Milan this work of maestro Zorn and for performing it with great pathos, and also a cheer to the staff of O'Artoteca for creating an environment conducive to the performance, in which the performer was in direct, close contact with the audience. We hope to hear before too long a new performance of the piece in Milan, and strongly encourage everybody to attend.

Alessandra vive e lavora a Milano.

Nonesuch and Tzadik Simultaneously Release Pat Metheny’s Recording of John Zorn’s "Tap: The Book of Angels, Vol. 20" on May 21

Pat Metheny: "Tap" / John Zorn [cover]
Nonesuch Records and Tzadik simultaneously release guitarist Pat Metheny’s recording of John Zorn’s Tap: The Book of Angels, Vol. 20 from Zorn’s Masada Book Two on May 21, 2013. This album is the first collaboration between the two artists, considered among their generation’s most innovative musicians. Besides his frequent collaborator, drummer Antonio Sanchez, Metheny plays all other instruments—guitars, sitar, tiples, bass, keyboards, orchestrionics, electronics, bandoneón, percussion, flugelhorn, and more—himself.
Beginning in the 1990s, Zorn wrote 500 songs inspired by traditional Jewish music; they came to be known as two volumes of theMasada Book. He performed the first 200 songs of Book One with the rotating members of the Masada ensemble for a decade before writing Book Two’s 300 tunes in just three months. Over the past eight years, the songs from Book Two have been recorded as volumes of The Book of Angels by a stellar group of musicians, including the Masada Quintet, Masada String Trio, Medeski Martin & Wood, and Marc Ribot.
Zorn says of Metheny’s recording, “Pat is of course a living legend—one of those rare lights in the universe. His incredible facility and dedication, indefatigable energy and focus, imagination, and never-ending curiosity have distinguished him as truly one of the greatest musicians on the planet.” He continues, “Tap is a showcase for Pat’s remarkable imagination, technique, passion, and love for the world. No matter how many times I listen to this recording I am hit with that same sense of exhilaration that hit me the very first time.”
Metheny, who recently won his 20th Grammy Award, adds, “I have admired John Zorn since the late ’70s and have followed his amazing output every step of the way. A few years ago, after contacting me to write some notes for one of his Arcana publications, John and I began an inspired e-mail connection. (As hard as it is to believe, we had never met in person over the years.) I mentioned that I had followed his Book of Angels series from the start and felt like I might be able to contribute something unique to the collection. With his enthusiastic encouragement, he gave me some suggestions as to which tunes were still unrecorded, and I picked the ones that jumped out and spoke to me. Over the next year, in between breaks from the road, I recorded them one by one in my home studio whenever I got a chance.”
