A Tango in the brothel by Rubén Andrés Costanzo third part

Mrs. Meri Lao in the book quoted above speaks about a sociological survey carried out by Hugo Lamas and Victor Di Santo, I think that she refers to the work of Hugo Lamas and Enrique Binda: El tango en la sociedad porteña 1880-192014, a search made on newspapers of the time, police and the town hall of the city archives of Buenos Aires. Although the research lacks a fluid prose and an appropriate epistemological approach, the material analyzed has an inestimable value and clears many myths and doubts about the first years of the tango. Among the topics addressed in the book two hit me more, first: In Chapter VII with successful documents by 1901 she proves that in the halls of entertainment frequented by "good people" it was not only danced the criollo tango "but also other music with "cortes y quebradas" - typical figures of the Tango choreography danced on other rhythms - these dances were advertised in newspapers and commented on the following day with extensive reviews.

Second: in Chapter XIII we find a statistical analysis of scores of publications in the first decade of 1900. The number is astonishing, almost half a million scores of tango published in those years. This number reminds us two things: either that the number of brothels was high or that the tango was played and listened to the homes that owned a musical instrument, high economic class families.
We find another interesting article that debunks the theory of the origin of the tango in brothels in the magazine Club de Tango, directed by Oscar Himschoot. The author is called Ricardo Ostuni, the title is a whole program: Baronessa Eloisa D’Herbil de Silva, Sconocsiuta Autrice di Vecchi Tanghi nell’epoca di Musica Proibita 15. The baroness, who was born in Cuba in 1852 and arrived in Buenos Aires in 1860, is a woman of great culture, speaks several languages and especially composed very eclectic music. Among her pieces are music for children, religious compositions and numerous tangos including: Che!… no me Caloties, La Multa, Por la calle Arenales, all published before 1905. His lyricist is Nicolas Granada known playwright and politician, a prominent figure of the culture rioplatense the end of 1800.

The tango was not born in the brothel, as even the beds and sheets, but we can not deny that this step was a milestone in its history.
Writing this article I had great help from the book by the sociologist Daniel Vidart from Uruguay - El Tango y su mundo16-that in chapter two contests in a documented form the thesis of brothel birth of the tango, while admitting his passage through the brothel. The author is indignant with the intellectuals who write without going into the argument, some working-class suburbs were also the territory of criminals but he recommends to all: "Do not confuse the point. We must draw a deep line, a key border between the poor and the criminals. We still bear the repeated mistake of aristocrats, plutocrats and bureaucrats who confuse the humble city with the dirt, the popular with low-grade, the proletariat with the indecent "(p. 34)
Another help came from the book by Jose Sebastian Tallon: El Tango en sus etapas de mùsica prohibida17, which, although contrasts in many ways with Daniel Vidart, surrender the idea of the existence of two tangos: one played in the brothels and one made in the homes of the people "(p. 34).

I started with a sentence by Wimpi that warns us of the emptiness that remains when one explains the mysteries of the world. Only the novelists are allowed to tell the world without needing to explain or documents. Perhaps many of you have read the stories of J.L. Borges set in the streets of Buenos Aires, but for those who know Spanish, I recommend two other authors: Gonzales Tuñon – Tangos18– and Manuel Alvarez – Historia del Arraba19l. Maybe the two of them with our imagination can fill the void of intellectual wandering.

Why not the next time we talk about the tango and the six strings? Do not forget mate.

A Tango in the brothel by Rubén Andrés Costanzo second part

The end of the ‘800 Buenos Aires and Montevideo were the center of a small universe, its gravity attracts millions of desperate people, mostly from Europe. Because of a bad reception, a lot of them came back in a few months to the land of origin, others remained piled up in the suburbs. The majority of these immigrants were men. Scalabrini Ortiz said: The man of Buenos Aires is "a lonely man who waits ”8, and a man in these conditions needs female company. Prostitution in Buenos Aires and Montevideo, between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries 9, was certainly a profitable business because the immigrants’ leisure passed by the brothel. The birth of a myth. We start to write the history of tango beginning from the 20s, whose narratives of his early age, collected from various writers, give us a picture of a dirty world, stories that are not reflected in official documents (police and municipal archives, licensing brothels). Sure, it would be naive to believe you shall find documents on this, but this lack of official sources remains truthful to the testimonies of many men who saw musicians enliven the evenings with Tango in brothels.

Moreover, the majority of the narrators came from the upper class and was used to belong to humble neighborhoods just for fun, without knowing the daily and honesty life of those places. There is no doubt that between the nineteenth and twentieth century, the tango was in the brothels and around them. Some places were very ambiguous as the Academias in Montevideo, or Piringundines in Buenos Aires. Vicente Rossi in his famous book Cosas de negros10 argues that tango was born in an Academia known as San Felice in the suburbs of Montevideo. Beyond this categorical assertion, let's see what activities took place there. Today, the success of a disco is partly due to the presence of women, which is why we offer free entrance or discounts to the ladies, in Buenos Aires and Montevideo in the early twentieth century, there were few women who provide free entrance to dance nights, so the Academias’ managers recriuted women dancers and charged a modest sum for each song danced to the men, so that for "men only" lower-class rioplatense fun was guaranteed. All scholars agree that people went in these placet only for dancing and not for having sex, but what the dancers did after the dance’s session was never recorded. I do not know how true it is, but the books tell us that women were chosen based on skill in dance and not for beauty, we know that the dancers wore short skirts to facilitate movements during the dance, this permitted to discover the ankles (eroticism of the past), we must add that if a woman resorted to this kind of work was by necessity and not for the pleasure of artistic dance.

During this period the men of the upper class of Buenos Aires was not without fun, and two entertainment venues have been made famous by the words of a tango, “Vos fuiste el rey del bailongo en lo de Laura y la Vasca…”11 different customers tell us that these two ladies ran brothels, dancing evenings for men of high social class as a prelude to sexual encounters. Musicians of the level of Rosendo Mendizabal, (author of the tango El Entrerriano) have played in these places.Although they have not been mentioned in famous tangos, there were many brothels which offered dancing with high caliber musicians.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, in the Boca district, became famous intersection (esquina) between Suarez and Necochea streets thanks to the many local that performed a good standard tango, despite being only local music was not hard to find in the streets around many brothels, we better not forget that this is the neighborhood of the port of Buenos Aires12. Among the places which we define as "ambiguous" for the mix of music, sex and crime, we can also mention: Raduni della Recoleta13 on the north, the premises of the park in Palermo, the curtains in Retiro; in the west Los Corrales (where the cowboys gathered the animals for slaughter). Many see the dirty origins of the tango in a few songs with titles in both directions. Remember that the primary tango was a dance and music were created based on this need, despite this some of these songs were funny or risque tunes, while other titles were ambiguously, for example: Dame la lata (Give me token - in reference to the token that the client gave to a prostitute as proof of payment) by Juan Pérez, La Clavada (the key) by Zambonini, La Cara de la Luna (written on the score so you sense La Concha de la Lora - The p ... of the prostitute) by Manuel Campoamor, the list could go on but as examples I think are sufficient. These arguments certainly show us the passage of the tango in the environment of commercial sex, but not that this is the place of his birth.

A Tango in the brothel by Rubén Andrés Costanzo first part

It is almost impossible to win a fight on equal terms against a myth because the myth is an idea and you can’t kill them, they live in the collective consciousness of the society and are passed down from generation to generation almost by osmosis and they hardly give us a glimpse of the truth that is hidden in the narrative, to obtain the truth we must get over the myth and see what lies beyond. But once explained the real part of the myth we run the risk of being left with nothing or little more of poetic in our hands.
Many stories about tango, from the early '900, are partly nostalgic inventions or stories of people of high social class that ignored or deliberately concealed part of the history of tango. A reverse process that also distorts the story happens whne we want to apply our values to events that occurred a century ago. For example, one hundred years ago it was agreed that two men were fighting a duel to settle a matter of honor, but it was unthinkable that a woman had the right to vote or take the knee-length skirt.

The majority of chronicles written in the late '800 and early '900, or gathered from interviews conducted in the 30s, question about the morality of the tango, describing it as a dance born in the brothels and bordellos of Rio de la Plata; others are talking about the tango as a dance born in the suburbs of Buenos Aires and Montevideo, the fusion of different rhythms, music and choreography. In Italy we find on the first position the book Il Tango2 by Horacio Salas, in the foreword the writer Ernesto Sabato wrote the categorical sentence "... the tango was born in brothels ..." (p. 9) later Salas said: "But the usual place the tango, from its genesis related to dance and its musical development, was the brothel. In the courtyards of the brothels, in the spacious waiting rooms and in addition to the main house, the prostitutes were in the habit of dancing with the customers "(p.85).

Opposed to the idea of the tango born in a brothel we found Mrs. Meri Lao, in her book Todo Tango3 - I recommend a careful reading of the chapter: "With the benefit of Inventango", where there is an analysis of numerous errors on the history of tango in the Italian publications - about the brothel the influential writer tells us: "No tango of those who, saying it on a Borgian way," along our life ", was created in the sphere of sex mercenary. The portraits of the bully-minded pimp dated mainly at the twenties and thirties. However, were overcome. Valid only for tourists "(p.23). Brothel no, brothel Yes. I do not think it is worth finding a middle way but a way to find an exit from this dilemma, and historical documents will help us.

It becomes spontaneously enter the brothel as the birthplace of a very sensual dance with a high level of eroticism. But what was the tango at the end of the nineteenth century? To be honest we did not have a clear idea of what it was, but there was not even the educational or philosophical need to explain it. In 1821 we find one of the first documents where the tango is represented not like a dance but as a place where people of African descent in Buenos Aires made dancing evenings for benefit 4 and only after this date the name is associated to a ball played in those places - "Tango de los morenos "," Tango de los negros "- even if they were still loose balls and not a couple. About 1870 Zarzuela’s companies who came from Spain led to the Rio de la Plata the genre known as Tango Andaluz which together with the Habanera landed in Buenos Aires with the sailors became two Central American fashionable dances, worn in the suburbs through the organ grinder .

To re-mix again the cards is the use of the word milonga. Jose Hernandez is the first in the epic poem El Gaucho Martín Fierro, to use the term "milonga" as a place for dancing5. It’s Ventura Lynch in 1883, that identify a dance of the suburbs as milonga, he also claims that the choreography of the milonga is an imitation of the grotesque candombe (or blacks tango) by the underworld of the suborb6. Until 1900 the terms milonga and tango identify the same dance. The first document that describes and names the tango as we know it dates back to 1897, the comedy Justicia Criolla by Ezequiel Soria7, describes the choreography of a tango danced in the courtyard of a house. From all this information we can say that the rioplatense tango is a hybrid product, born form the urban working class suburbs. But then, when did the brothels enter in the history of tango?

What’s that thing called tango? by Rubén Andrés Costanzo second part

These are the chronicles that were documented at the time, but most likely the tango has had other unknown pioneers in Europe. In 1908 a London film studio had made available to the public a documentary where Argentine teachers teach first steps of the tango, which demonstrates the commercial success of the new dance.
The echo of the success of tango in Europe reached Rio de la Plata, where the tango dance was not yet accepted as a dance for society in some conservative areas of Buenos Aires. In 1913 Baron De Marchi prompted by the success of tango in Europe, organized a festival in the city of Buenos Aires to "introduce" the tango in high society, an unnecessary moves according to some tango’s lovers. A journalist of the time, who wrote under the pseudonym of Viejo Tanghero6, criticized the event replicating that the dance performed on that occasion was not tango, but a dance created for use and consumption of the Europeans and not the true tango of the suburbs of Buenos Aires.
For us it’s very difficult to know what was the "real tango" which was referring to the journalist, because the "folkloric" tango has never been registered, except in some not so much detailed descriptions. From this chronicle one thing remains: the verdict of Viejo Tanguero: "This is not tango”, which will be a constant to identify the major changes in the phenomenon tango. But after the european influence on tango where did its essence remaine? The tango’s river followed its course, since 1910 the rioplatense society became more homogeneous, children of immigrants born in Buenos Aires had wanted to leave the old imitation and the challenges of dance that characterized the past needed a different tango where they can be reflected starting the golden age of Guarda Vieja7.
Despite the winds of war blowing in Europe during the second decade of the'900 tango continued its race against censorship by religious and political power of the old continent and I would like to make a bracket for leaving you two italian visions of tango in 1914, I found very intelligent the apology of tango appeared on the monthly roman magazine: “Noi e il mondo”,edited in March of that year, I choose this section by Renato Berninzoni, author of the article titled "Tango": "So no more polka and all kind of antiques! It is time to find a dance that shall be the word (in the case that, as aesthetes say, we can talk with our legs) a dance that shall be the word for our civilization and that condenses all of exquisitely perverse, ipersensibile, brainy which is the substratum of our "Io". "
The rest of the article shows that the author knew the entertainments in Italian society of that time, what were the dances and fashions and the discussions on the morality of their own, without a doubt he is in favor of the tango. Even Guglielmo Emanuel sided in favor of the tango, but I cannot be sure of his intellectual honesty, because, again in 1914 but the magazine "L’illustrazione italiana” in an article entitled L’età del Tango, he begins a story, in fist person, claiming to have witnessed in Argentina’s countryside to a funeral wake for a child, celebrated with a party where people danced tango, probably this was a “funerale del angelito8” that means nothing with tango, but has that exotic aurea that strikes the not informed reader, the rest of the article is an interesting and very detailed description of the tango dance, but the first part obscure everything else. Unfortunately still today there is a lack of intellectual honesty about what people write about tango, shelves full of books and newspaper’s articles that try to talk to tango ... but maybe it was better not to have written them.
After the First World War, in Buenos Aires, the tango prepares a new transformation which can be defined as the migration of the tango from the foot of the dancers to the voice of the singer: the birth of the tango song, which is not the tango sung (gender that already existed) but a new almost inseparable amalgam between music and poetry, inaugurated by Carlos Gardel. The porteña society needed a voice and the tango could not stay outside it. In early 1920 the Guardia Vieja leaves the stage at Decariana epoc, style of interpreting and composing tango which has its most important representative in the figure by violinist Julio De Caro, style that will represent the essence of tango until 1955, when will rise the figure of Astor Pantaleòn Piazzola. Both styles have adapted to changes in rioplatense society, not without controversy, which usually began with the sentence: "this is not tango."

This succession of styles does not mean that one cancels the previous one, but that the new takes from the old and sometimes, as in the case of Piazzolla, goes to look for in an oldest tango something that the decariano style had overlooked: the Canyengue, term used to identify the proper rhythm of the tango. For now I will stop here, I know I have left open many questions, it was not my interest to do an history of tango. But I will continue to talk about tango with you, walk between your curiosity and my doubts. Perhaps we should throw down the window a few stereotypes, maybe it shall be necessary getting inside dusty libraries, between books from the yellowed paper, in the labyrinths of Borges or listen to a few stories by the grey Angelof Dolina and gray, and why not, do an accelerated course of Spanish for crazy people to understand the surreal Ferrer, or take a trip of seventy days with Cortázar. I leave you, I have an appointment with a pale blonde in a tale of Tuñón, I want to know if it is true that the tango was born in the brothel. Goodbye to the next.

What’s that thing called tango? by Rubén Andrés Costanzo first part

"... The taste of tango simply is, you don’t create it, you can’t produce it, you can immagine it. And this is why tango is not a work, or a man, or an instrument-invariant basis on which you build the most absurd literary definitions-;it is not even a musical notation”1

A pair of dancers engaged in a passionate dance, erotica, with a complex choreography that seems to struggle against the rhythm instead of being lead by him, this is the image that an Italian or an European has about tango. Investigated among the inhabitants of Buenos Aires, we discover that the perception of the tango is like an invisible rope that ties the whole city, the tango evokes its own neighborhood, friends of the bar, your mother, an unrequited love, the nostalgia of the present, anger. Only one thing and two perceptions that travel in opposite directions. It is not easy to define in words tango and it happens very often that the words are not the most suitable instruments to define a thing but at the same time they are essential to describe the thing.

What to do then? Let’s circumscribe the tango in some limits. Geographic: tango is a phenomenon born of a fusion of different cultures that developed in the cities of Montevideo in Uruguay and Buenos Aires in Argentina. Temporal: origin end XIX century and early years of the twentieth century, some etnomusicologists tango was born in the last decades of the 1800s as the imitation of the dances of African origin, the imitators were European immigrants who lived in the slums of the cities mentioned, this "new" dance hadn’t his own music and it was adopting and adapting different musical rhythms present in that area, including the milonga, the Habanera, and even the mazurka, in the late 800's there was also another rhythm of music from Spain called tanguillo or tango andaluz, very fashionable in rioplatensi theatre2.
There are other theories and musical analysis about the origin of tango, I will show a bibliography with some interesting work on the topic, for those who want to deepen. Now focus your attention on the phenomenon tango since 1897, the year of the creation of the tango El Entrerriano, one of the most ancient tangos of which we know the author: Rosendo Cayetano Mendizabal; let’s discover if there is a " tanghità ", an essence , which gives the same identity to El Entrerriano by Mendizabal and Troileana Suite by Astor Piazzola composed in 1975, including all tangos composed between these two dates from thousands of musicians.

The challenge is interesting: to determine whether the essence of a phenomenon which spans 100 years of history, changing his shape according to historical circumstances, and the modes and contaminations, continues to be the same or even we call tango different things. In the beginning I reported in the different perceptions that Europeans and porteños3 have about tango inside porteña society, even if the perception of tango is the same, the debate about the true essence of tango, it’s harsh and ancient as is tango.
Imagine the tango like a river that is born in the high mountains formed by streams of melting water and then, as it progresses towards the sea changes its shape, color and size. The tango as Josè Gabello said: "is not as centrifugal as jazz which split consistently into new musical species. It is centripetal. It draws everything toward itself. Incorporates everything. Anything that puts in his body: it ingests, digests and metabolizes”4. Consequently, all that remains "outside" even if it seems tango is not tango.

But outside what? Please excuse the rioplatense campanilism in this response, the main essence of the tango can not be other than to represent, explain, convey and share the way of being of the inhabitants of Montevideo and Buenos Aires. The tango, as music, was born at the late 800's to give to the Buenos Aires’s inhabitant a rhythm suited to the steps of a new dance, which needed a music with a short melodic phrases and rhythmic fast execution (the first tangos were performed in 2 / 4) to perform its frenetic choreography, which enhance his individual skills and show who was the boss of that universe called by Borges "the cult of knife and courage5”, satisfy this need for the tango was his first essence.
Not only in the suburbs of Buenos Aires and Montevideo social habits was changing. The world at the end of'800 was changing, the masses began to play an important role in political, social and cultural decisions, changed their habits, the old and caste dances where men and women would lightly approaching, were leaving space to dance for a couple where the dancers were bound in an embrace, the most representative example: the waltz. In this wind of change and in an Europe open to all new exotism makes its appearance tango. In 1906 the Cadets from Fregata Sarmiento (the training ship of the Argentine naval fleets) in their annual round trip, left in each port visited scores of La Morocha tango, in 1907 a large warehouse in Buenos Aires, Casa Gath & Chávez sent to Paris, the composer and performer Angel Villoldo, with Alfredo Gobbi and his wife Flora Hortensia Rodríguez to record some tangos on disk. Villoldo will return to Buenos Aires in 1908, while the Gobbi and his wife remained in Europe spreading the tango until the outbreak of the First World War.

Buenos Aieres no te olvida

I
Quièn sabe, si supieras que nunca te he olvidado,
volviendo a tu pasado de acorderàs de mí...

II
Decí percanta, ¿qué has hecho
de mi pobre corazòn?

III
Al cotorro abandonado ya
ni el sol de la mañana
asoma por la ventana,
como cuando estabas vos
Y aquel perrito compañero,
que por tu ausencia non comía,
al verme solo, el otro dia,
tambien me dejò.

I bis

I

II
Dimmi ragazza cosa hai fatto
nel mio povero cuore?

III
All'appartamento abbandonato già
nemmeno il sole del mattino
appare dalla finestra
come quando c'eri tu
E il cane compagno
che per la tua assenza non mangiava
al vedermi solo, l'altro giorno,
anche lui mi lasciò

I bis
Comunque

I
La cumparsa de miserias sin fin,
desfila en torno
de aquel ser enfermo,
que pronto ha de morir de pena.
Por eso es que en su lecho,
solloza acongojando, recordando
el pasado que lo hace padecer.

II

I bis
Largo tiempo despuès,
cayò al hogar materno,
para poder curar
su enfermo y herido corazòn,
y supo que su viejta santa
la que él había dejado,
el invierno pasado
de frío se murió.

III

I para Fin
Entre sombras, se le oye respirar sufriente.
al que antes de morir sonriè,
porque una dulce paz le llega.
Sintiò que desde el cielo,
la madrecita buena,
mitigando sus penas e sus culpas
loperdonò.

LA CUMPARSITA

I
La comparsa di miserie senza fine
sfila attorno
di quel essere malato
che presto morrà di penna
Per questo nel suo letto
piange angosciato, ricordando
il passato che lo fa soffrire

II

I bis
Molto tempo dopo
tornò al focolare materno,
per poter guarire
il suo malato e ferito cuore,
e seppe che la sua madre santa
che lui aveva lasciato,
l'inverno scorso
di freddo morì

III

A presto.
