Il ritorno di Peter Pears e del liuto. Nel 1970 Bream torna a suonare il suo nuovo liuto realizzato da David Rubio per accompagnare il canto di Sir Peter Pears, eseguendo musiche di Thomas Morley, John Dowland, Philip Rosseter e Thomas Ford. Buon Natale da Andrea Aguzzi, ci risentiremo in radio, dopo l'Epifania, nel 2016. A presto!

December 23, 2015: Elizabethan Lute Songs

The return of Peter Pears and the lute. In 1970 Bream returns to play his new lute made by David Rubio to accompany the singing of Sir Peter Pears, performing music by Thomas Morley, John Dowland, Philip Rossiter and Thomas Ford. Recensione di Mr Dowland's Fortune di Michele Carreca, 2014 Continuo Records

Poche persone possono vantare una influenza musicale così importante come quella di Sir John Dowland, geniale e talentuoso liutista e compositore britannico vissuto a cavallo tra il 1500 e il 1600, testimone e attivo partecipatore di un'epoca eccezionalmente prodiga di talenti, intuizioni, invenzioni e creazioni musicali. A leggere la sua biografia, presente all'interno del libretto di 24 pagine in italiano e in inglese che accompagna il cd, non sembra di essere così distanti dalle biografie di diverse nostre rock star contemporanee: viaggi, intrighi, concerti, successi, le pubblicazioni, l'ammirazione dei gentiluomini di corte, il desiderio di tornare dalla sua Regina, la religione cattolica... Dowland rappresenta una figura mitica che a distanza di quasi quattro secoli continua a essere amata, studiata, suonata, registrata e soprattutto pensata e sviluppata.
I segreto di questo successo? Certo Dowland era un finissimo cesellatore di melodie e una eccellente esecutore, i suoni brani sono impeccabili, orecchiabili e mai banali, ma soprattutto riescono a mantenere una certa contemporaneità grazie alla loro capacità nel trattare i grandi tempi delle emozioni umane: Dowland ci parla, ci canta e ci suona di amori, desideri, sconfitte, angosce, paure... insomma delle nostre vicissitudini umane, delle nostre debolezze, dei nostri piaceri. L'uomo non è poi così cambiato in questi ultimi secoli, certo ci siamo evoluti, siamo diventati più raffinati, più complessi, le nostre società si sono evolute, il progresso ci ha spinto avanti, ma alla fine di carne siamo fatti e alla carne torniamo sempre.
Michele Carreca e il suo liuto rinascimentale a 8 cori costruito da Stephen Murphy rendono omaggio a questo grande uomo con un cd contenente 25 brani, una raccolta dei suoi pezzi più famosi, musiche immortali come Mrs Vaux’s Galliard,The Right Honourable The Lady Clifton’s Spirit,John Dowland’s Galliard, Sir John Smith, His Almain, Lachrimæ,The Right Honourable Earl of Essex, His Galliard, Lady Hunsdon’s Puffe, Fortune, Mr Dowland’s Midnight, Sweet Robin e Dowland’s Galliard, per citarne alcuni.
Non mi posso certo considerare un esperto di musica per liuto, ma gli otto cori del liuto di Carreca mi hanno piacevolmente impressionato per la sua pulizia, il suo lirismo e la gradevole tensione musicale che riesce a esprimere, reinterpretando con notevole bravura queste musiche ballate e ascoltate da persone di cui anche il solo ricordo si è sbiadito e si è fatto polvere tra la polvere dei secoli. Registrazione pulita e con il giusto riverbero. Consigliatissimo.

Review of Mr. Dowland's Fortune by Michele Carreca, 2014 Continuo Records

Few people can boast a musical influence as important as that one of Sir John Dowland, brilliant and talented British lutenist and composer who lived between 1500 and 1600, an active witness of an era of exceptionally generous with talents, insights, inventions and musical creations. To read his biography, inside the 24-page booklet in Italian and English that accompanies the CD, does not seem to be so far apart from the biographies of several of our contemporary rock stars: travels, intrigue, concerts, achievements, publications , the admiration of courtiers, the desire to return to his Queen, the Catholic religion ... Dowland is a mythical figure that after almost four centuries continues to be loved, studied, played, recorded and contnually defineds and developed .
The secret of this success? Dowland was certainly a fine chaser of melodies and an excellent performer, his musics are clean, catchy and never dull, but most are able to maintain a certain contemporaneity due to their ability in dealing with the great times of human emotions: Dowland speaks to us, sings and plays about loves, desires, losses, anxieties, fears ... all about our human vicissitudes, our weaknesses, our pleasures. Man is not all that changed in recent centuries, certainly we have evolved, we have become more sophisticated, more complex, our societies have evolved, progress has pushed us forward, but in the end we are made of flesh and to the flesh we always come back.
Michele Carreca and his Renaissance 8 choirs lute built by Stephen Murphy pays homage to this great man with a CD containing 25 songs, a collection of his most famous pieces, immortal music as Mrs Vaux's Galliard, The Right Honourable The Lady Clifton's Spirit, John Dowland's Galliard, Sir John Smith, His Almain, Lachrimae, The Right Honourable Earl of Essex, His Galliard, Lady Hunsdon's Puffe, Fortune, Mr. Dowland's Midnight, Sweet Robin and Dowland's Galliard, to name a few.
I can hardly be considered an expert in music for lute, but the eight choirs of  Carreca's lute pleasantly impressed me by its cleanliness, its lyricism and pleasant musical tension that can express, reinterpreting with considerable skill this music and ballads listen to people when even the mere memory has faded and became dust in the dust of centuries. Clean recording and with the right reverb. Highly recommended.
