Nonesuch and Tzadik Simultaneously Release Pat Metheny’s Recording of John Zorn’s "Tap: The Book of Angels, Vol. 20" on May 21

Pat Metheny: "Tap" / John Zorn [cover]
Nonesuch Records and Tzadik simultaneously release guitarist Pat Metheny’s recording of John Zorn’s Tap: The Book of Angels, Vol. 20 from Zorn’s Masada Book Two on May 21, 2013. This album is the first collaboration between the two artists, considered among their generation’s most innovative musicians. Besides his frequent collaborator, drummer Antonio Sanchez, Metheny plays all other instruments—guitars, sitar, tiples, bass, keyboards, orchestrionics, electronics, bandoneón, percussion, flugelhorn, and more—himself.
Beginning in the 1990s, Zorn wrote 500 songs inspired by traditional Jewish music; they came to be known as two volumes of theMasada Book. He performed the first 200 songs of Book One with the rotating members of the Masada ensemble for a decade before writing Book Two’s 300 tunes in just three months. Over the past eight years, the songs from Book Two have been recorded as volumes of The Book of Angels by a stellar group of musicians, including the Masada Quintet, Masada String Trio, Medeski Martin & Wood, and Marc Ribot.
Zorn says of Metheny’s recording, “Pat is of course a living legend—one of those rare lights in the universe. His incredible facility and dedication, indefatigable energy and focus, imagination, and never-ending curiosity have distinguished him as truly one of the greatest musicians on the planet.” He continues, “Tap is a showcase for Pat’s remarkable imagination, technique, passion, and love for the world. No matter how many times I listen to this recording I am hit with that same sense of exhilaration that hit me the very first time.”
Metheny, who recently won his 20th Grammy Award, adds, “I have admired John Zorn since the late ’70s and have followed his amazing output every step of the way. A few years ago, after contacting me to write some notes for one of his Arcana publications, John and I began an inspired e-mail connection. (As hard as it is to believe, we had never met in person over the years.) I mentioned that I had followed his Book of Angels series from the start and felt like I might be able to contribute something unique to the collection. With his enthusiastic encouragement, he gave me some suggestions as to which tunes were still unrecorded, and I picked the ones that jumped out and spoke to me. Over the next year, in between breaks from the road, I recorded them one by one in my home studio whenever I got a chance.”

Recensione di Guido Santorsola Vol.2 Solo Guitar Works di Antonio Rugolo. Stradivarius 2013

L’oggetto li vale tutti!

Video: Emanuele Forni Plays György Kurtág ... A kis csava op. 15b

Video: Emanuele Forni plays Toshio Hosokawa ~ Renka I

In basketball they call them “all around”: these are particular players who know everything and do it well in any situation and role. They have the right answer always ready, the creative flash, they are cool and talented off from the norm, but to see them moving in the field, at first impression, because of an innate discretion and antidivism is difficult to find in them all these skills.

Emanuele Forni shows on this record, the sixteenth volume of the Guitar Collection series for the Stradivarius, to be a true “all around” capable of moving easily between different scores and diverse instrumentation. The disc is a real hotchpotch of contemporary guitar, it goes into the electronics of Ulrich Kieger to the minimalism of Steve Reich, from the late modernism of Hosokawa and Kurtag to the neo romanticism of Takemitsu from the isolationism of Hugues Dufourt to the ambient of Eve Beglarian to the quasi theater of Aperghis, all tracks that cover a span of three decades even, some are world premiere and never recorded before.

Ceci n'est pas une guitare can be hard and difficult at first listen, but demonstrates a continuing freshness and modernity surprising. There is a scent of rhizomes and I'm sure that the philosopher Gilles Deleuze would have liked this music, the booklet accompanying the disc (always in Stradivarius style) is also of great help to frame the musics and introduce the listener to the ideas of composers . This disc surprised, first by the skill that the musician demonstrates moving in such different music scenes, and secondly for the idea of sound below. It’s the sound that strikes a sound oblique, transverse, polychromatic, the endless possibilities that leads to other plays: Brian Eno, Robert Fripp to a more general idea of soundscape, wide plateux of sounds. A very good album that grows with each listen.

Grondona plays Asturias music by Albeniz, Stradivarius 2009

The musicians are explorers, pathfinders as it existed once upon a time, like Livingstone, Stanley and even like Walter Bonatti, able to pick up maps written for them by some geographers of the past, maps to interpret, to decipher, from which start to explore and bring back a new representation of the territory. Do you think this is a strange idea? Try to think about the musical score as a map and the composer as a geographer who created it and the musician as the explorer who ventures with this map in his hands, which returns telling us the territory he explored playing this score. Each new performance, each new interpretation unfolds before us a new territory, a new representation of the score, which is text and map together at the same time, guidelines for the musician who must follow and at the same time revealing it by his own taste, its own personality, its own experience. How many times have we heard playing Asturias? How many times have we asked ourselves, again? Why is this question, which is not simply addressed to Asturias? Because sometimes happens that a musician is able to give a performance of a music getting such beauty and elegance that this new representation of the score becomes not only a landmark but the new canon style at which we feel an obligation, implicit or explicitly, to comply. It happens with Segovia and it will happen again. It’s like as facing his version we lack the forces, lack the courage to look for in the score, in the map a new representation, a new path, to explore an area that as visited by hordes of tourists we now believe that has exhausted its possibilities. This is perhaps the major difference between a real musician (explorer) and the simple tourist (the trivial interpreter): courage, culture, musical and emotional intelligence to be able to watch the score with new eyes and sensitivity, the ability to explore a new direction, to mark a new path, to show and represent things in a new perspective, perhaps, to create a new aesthetic and a new ethics. This is why I have to thank Stefano Grondona that collaboratively with the excellent Laura Mondiello has decided to offer us in closing 2009 this tribute to the music of Isaac Albeniz for the centenary of his death. Also for this occasion the Master gives us an essay of his art, exquisitely interpreting the music of Albeniz and managing the miracle to giving us new interpretations and new ways of listening to this music that are the most ever played by classical guitarists. As always, playing the original Torres, equipped with new ropes made by Aquila Corde, the two guitarists play twelve tracks (including the famous Asturias) demonstrating to the lazies and the losers that who wants to do be a musician does not need a tourist’s mentality but an explorer’s one, and that also in maps and in the most popular or played scores we can create new routes, managing to escape from the usual cliches and the usual stereotypes. Eventually, perhaps, as in a story by Borges, the geographer and explorer, will examine a single map on which are represented on all maps of the universe, then perhaps all the music will become a music only, or perhaps , a single sound .... I do not know. A great album recorded in perfect way by Davide Piva and mastered by Andrea Dandolo, with beautiful packaging and graphics edited by Patrizia Peruffo. Five Stars!

Video: Fantasia Para Un Gentilhombre - Joaquin Rodrigo (Live)

Review of Rodrigo The Three Guitar Concertos, Regis, 1994

Very, very beautiful indeed this cd produce by Regis that contains the three concerts for guitar by the great Joaquin Rodrigo. The players of these precious jewels set in a bright diadem bright, famous passages as the Concierto de Aranjuez, the Fantasia para un Gentilhombre and the Concierto para una Fiesta are the guitarist Alfonso Moreno and State of Mexico Symphony Orchestra directed by Enrique Batiz.
The cd is simply great and both the soloist and the orchestra are well direct and in complete harmony in the execution of these concerts with their Hispanic imprint. I think would be useless to stop on a concert as the Aranjuez, so famous and important not only in the classic repertoire having  influenced composers and interpreters of other musical genres like the genial Gil Evans and Miles Davis in the their immortal Sketches of Spain. And I think the same for the Fantasia para un Gentilhombre made immortal and devoted to the great Segovia, in his memorable recording for the Deutsche Grammophone.
I didn't know the Concierto para una Fiesta and it has been pure pleasure to listen to it.
The amazing thing is however the fact of the temporal distance among these three compositions: Aranjuez was composed in 1939, Fantasia in 1954 and Fiesta in 1983 ... yet I don’t feel a great distance and not this temporal jump. In a certain sense it is like as if Rodrigo had continued on the same temporal line, as if the time didn't care for him keeping on finishing up an only marvelous music or passage. Listen to you them in sequence without interruptions, they are almost 70 minutes of pure pleasure. It’s the warm and sunny Spain that speaks.

Ensemble Tesoro Harmonico in concerto

Prospero Cauciello, un napoletano a Parigi
Sabato 9 Marzo ore 21

Concerto di musica barocca,
stagione “Regie Sinfonie” a Palazzo Barolo,
via delle Orfane 7, Torino

Tesoro Harmonico:
Francesca Odling, traversiere
Dora Filippone, Elena Parasacco, mandolino
Francesca Lanfranco, clavicembalo

stagioni concertistiche, festival e rassegne in Italia e all’estero.

Reviews of Odyssey in Studio & in Concert by Terje Rypdal, ECM 2012

I quote from the beautiful essay by Alessandro "Unfolk" Monti published a long time ago here on this blog: " "Odyssey" (ECM 1975) is his masterpiece that ideally closes the first phase of his record career. It’s a Double album (winning that year of the premium of the German criticism) in which the ghost of his music adding new possibilities, but that in the scandalous and inexplicable digital version (both on single cd that in download) omits the most interesting passage "Rolling Stone", a marathon of a side in which the open style of the guitarist  resplendent in all of his beauty and creativeness. Because the reprint in cd has excluded that stupendous passage we will never know (a double cd was the most obvious thing), but purchase the original (still available second-hand) album is the only possibility to have the complete image of that job."
The ECM finally repeair this errors of the past producing a beautiful box with three cd of Odyssey, the first two are the integral edition of the double vinyl and the third one is the 1976 concert unpublished recording entitled Unfinished Hightballs played together with the Swedish Radio Jazz Group.
There is no better thing to listen to the beautiful and dilated atmospheres of the fresh Norwegian sonorous seas in this cold winter! Rypdal is a great guitarist that knows how to express very well himself in long fantastic electric ballads as "Darkness Falls", "Over Birkerot", "Slowly", "Better Off Without You", "Ballade" and of course the mythical one "Rolling Stone" that we can finally listen in digital. Rypdal shows his hendrix psychedelic influences as the love for Coltrane and Albert Ayler using both distortion and volume pedales, his guitar produces long dilated notes or nervous sounds decidedly distant from the jazz and rock guitar models of these times (perhaps made exception for John Mc Laughling and Allan Holdsworth) proposing some innovative solutions that however won't have a lot of succession in the jazz but that  will be adapted later instead by "cosmic guitarists" as Michael Brook.
Very beautiful also the cd live, effective testimony of the intense concert activity developed from the Odyssey Band and of the compositive ambitions by Rypdal that here can also lean on on the Swedish Radio Jazz Group.
At the end we did it, we had to wait  37 years but Odyssey it is finally listening in all of its beauty, excellent the job of remastering as the beautiful minimalist design of the box and the book that it accompanies it with the photos in black and white by Giuseppe Pino and Roberto Masotti. Thanks ECM!

Joaquín Rodrigo - Fantasia para un gentilhombre

Recensione di Rodrigo The Three Guitar Concertos, Regis, 1994
