Questa sera alle 21 va in onda Guitars Speak, programma dedicato alla chitarra. Ascolteremo due modi completamente diversi, ugualmente validi di interpretare, vedere e sentire la musica contemporanea. Da un lato i rigorosi Nuntempe Ensemble dal Sudamerica dall'altra la dolcezza dell'ungherese Tsofia Boros.

This evening at 9PM we will trasmit Guitars Speak, a radio program dedicated to the guitar. We will listen to two completely different ways, equally valid to interpret, play and hear contemporary music. On the one hand the rigorous Nuntempe Ensemble from South America to the other, the sweetness of the Hungarian Tsofia Boros.

 Nuntempe Ensemble is a guitar quartet formed in 2008, dedicated to research, interpretation and dissemination of contemporary music. It takes its name from the esperanto word "nuntempe, which means "now".
From its beginnings, the Ensemble has worked with original contemporary repertoire for guitar quartet. Its eclectic repertoire is composed of dissimilar aesthetics, from those inspired in traditional folk music to the most avant-gard musical languages, the guitar constituting its common thread.
 The quartet approaches 20th and 21th century music from a complex viewpoint which takes into consideration cultural diversity,musical pluralism and its own conception of the musical, technical, and expressive possibilities inherent to the guitar

Review of String Machine by Nuntempe Ensemble, 2014

Please pay attention, dear Europeans, be very careful. Contemporary music has so long colonized also the South American continent, generating a new set of composers who provide a particular and personal attention to classical guitar’s language.

We have an excellent example with this cd, String Machine, released by Nuntempe Ensemble, four classical guitarists, Pablo Boltshauser, Agustin Nazzetta, Andrés Vaccarelli and Arile Elijovich, which since 2008 engage themselves with perseverance and dedication to the exploration of the vast guitar repertoire with particular attention to contemporary music and tocultural and ethnic diversity, musical pluralism and all possible combinations of timbre, style and expressive that their six strings instruments allow.

This cd is made of compositions created specifically for the quartet, all recently dating recently, starting from six fragments of the Cuarteto nro2 composed in 1999 by the Colombian composer Eblis Alvarez. The other tracks are Ciclis (2010) commissioned by Federico Nunez, Libro de Estudios (2004) by Juan Pablo Simoniello, Iniciar Sesion (2011) Cecilia Pereyra and the song that gives the title to the cd, String Machine (2010), by Marcelo Delgado.

All music move through all the possible techniques (arpeggiated, pinched, rhythmic tensions, colors, call and response between the instruments, etc.) that can be obtained and used in the classical guitar’s context and you immediately feel a strong rhythmic tension. The rhythm management and use of the guitar as a percussion instrument, even in its tonal component, seem to be the hallmarks of this CD. 

Before formulating these thoughts I decided to let the cd mature through prolonged and repeated listens repeatedly over time, this is not easy listening music but after a while I was caught and immersed in the sounds that come from the four instruments of the Ensemble, which proves to be a perfect rhythmic and melodic "machine", a perfectly tight-knit, well-oiled and integrated. It’s impossible, at least for me, to identify the four musicians and to figure out who is playing in the absence of scores. Pablo Boltshauser, Agustin Nazzetta, Andrés Vaccarelli and Arile Elijovich are four excellent virtuous and in this CD they gives a great demonstration of their ability. Attenzione, cari europei, fate molta attenzione. La musica contemporanea ha ormai da tempo colonizzato anche il continente sudamericano generando una nuova serie di compositori che prestano una particolare e personale attenzione ai linguaggi della chitarra classica.

Ne è un eccellente esempio questo cd, String Machine, realizzato dal Nuntempe Ensemble di quattro chitarristi di estrazione classica, Pablo Boltshauser, Agustin Nazzetta, Andrés Vaccarelli e Arile Elijovich, che dal 2008 si dedicano con costanza e abnegazione all’esplorazione del vasto repertorio chitarristico con una particolare attenzione al repertorio contemporaneo con una visione particolarmente attenta alle diversità culturali e etniche, al pluralismo musicale e a tutte le possibili combinazioni timbriche, stilistiche e espressive che le loro sei corde consentono.

Questo cd presenta tutte composizioni realizzate appositamente per il quartetto, tutte con datazione decisamente recente, a partire dai sei frammenti del Cuarteto nro2 composto nel 1999 dal compositore colombiano Eblis Alvarez. Gli altri brani presenti sono Ciclis (2010) commissionato a Federico Nunez, Libro de Estudios (2004) di Juan Pablo Simoniello, Iniciar Sesion (2011) di Cecilia Pereyra e il brano che da il titolo al cd, String Machine (2010) di Marcelo Delgado.

Tutti brani fanno sfoglio di tutte le possibili tecniche (arpeggiati, pizzicati, tensioni ritmiche, cromatismi, call and response tra gli strumenti, etc.) che si possono ricavare e utilizzare nell’ambito della chitarra e si avverte immediatamente una forte tensione ritmica. La gestione del ritmo e l’utilizzo della chitarra come strumento percussivo , perfino nella sua componente timbrica, sembrano essere i tratti distintivi di questo cd, dall’ascolto non facile ma sicuramente affascinante.

Prima di formulare queste riflessioni scritte ho ritenuto di doverlo lasciare maturare tramite ascolti prolungati e reiterati più volte nel tempo, non è un ascolto facile ma dopo un po’ ci si lascia trasportare e avvolgere dai suoni che provengono dai quattro strumenti dell’Ensemble, che si dimostra essere una “macchina” ritmica e melodica perfettamente affiatata, rodata e ben integrata. Impossibile identificare i quattro musicisti, impossibile, almeno per me, capire chi sta suonando cosa in assenza delle partiture. Pablo Boltshauser, Agustin Nazzetta, Andrés Vaccarelli e Arile Elijovich sono quattro eccellenti virtuosi che in questo cd danno una ottima dimostrazione delle loro capacità. Spero di sentire parlare di loro ancora e presto.
