Il liuto è stato lo strumento principe dell'iconografia rinascimentale e barocca, credo non esista dipinto dell'epoca che non lo ritragga all'interno delle raffinate rappresentazioni della vista di corte o nelle mani di putti e angeli festanti. Questa sera ascolteremo un cd particolarmente interessante, tutto dedicato alla scuola veneziana di liuto, fiorita a Venezia nel '500. Questa sera faremo un salto nella storia, attraverso i secoli.

The lute was the main instrument of the Renaissance and Baroque iconography,  I do not think there is any painting of the time that does not retract it into the refined representations of nobile courts or in the hands of cherubs and angels rejoicing. Tonight we will listen to a  particularly interesting cd, entirely dedicated to the Venetian school of lute, which flourished in Venice in 500's. Tonight we will make a leap into history through the centuries.

Review of Early Venetian Lute Music by Christopher Wilson and Shirley Rumsey, Naxos, 1999

I have bought this cd in 1999. It was reviewed by the magazine Wire, probably the best magazine to disposition of whom interests of musical avant-garde. I was surprised by the enthusiastic critique of a cd of Renaissance’s music for lute on a magazine that exclusively occupied by avant-garde and contemporary sounds. The fact that then the cd was produced by the Naxos (and therefore to low price) and that it concerned authors of the Venetian school of lute it immediately pushed me to the purchase. To distance of over 13 years I still find great pleasure listening to Christopher Wilson and Shirley Rumsey harping these sweet and sweet musics on their instruments, here they delight us with the compositions of Joan Ambrosio Dalza, Francesco Spinacio, Franciscus Bossinensis and Vincenzo Capirola. Pavane, Calata alla Spagnola, Tastar de Corde are among the titles of the passages that they play more and that they testify the wealth of the Venetian musical school that bloomed in 1500 attracting  the best performers of the epoch.
A cd that is simply out of time and that justly didn’t escaped to the experienced ears of the journalists of Wire, in fact what could be better of the circles and of the folds of the Baroque music to put order in the chaos and in the post modernism of our epoch? The two interpreters are good and the recording is impeccable indeed, try these sweet airs and melodies, they will accompany us better in the new year that attends us.

Ho comprato questo cd nel 1999 su segnalazione della rivista Wire, probabilmente la migliore rivista a disposizione di chi si interessa di avanguardie musicali. Rimasi colpito nel leggere la recensione entusiasta di un cd di musiche per liuto rinascimentale su una rivista che si occupava esclusivamente di avanguardia e di contemporanea. Il fatto che poi il cd fosse prodotto dalla Naxos (e quindi a basso prezzo) e che riguardasse autori della scuola di liuto veneziana mi spinse immediatamente all’acquisto. A distanza di oltre 13 anni trovo ancora grande piacere nell’ascoltare Christopher Wilson e Shirley Rumsey arpeggiare queste dolci e soavi musiche sui loro strumenti, qui ci deliziano con le composizioni di Joan Ambrosio Dalza, Francesco Spinacio, Franciscus Bossinensis e Vincenzo Capirola. Pavane, Calata alla Spagnola, Tastar de Corde sono tra i titoli dei brani che più ricorrono  e che testimoniano la ricchezza della scuola musicale veneziana che fiorì nel 1500 attirando a se i migliori esecutori dell’epoca.
Un disco che esce dal tempo e che non era giustamente sfuggito alle orecchie esperte dei giornalisti di Wire, cosa di meglio della circolarità e delle pieghe della musica barocca per mettere ordine nel caos e nel post modernismo della nostra epoca? I due interpreti sono bravissimi e la registrazione è davvero impeccabile, lasciatevi tentare da queste dolci arie e melodie, ci accompagneranno meglio nel nuovo anno che ci attende.
