Guitars Speak secondo anno: Dither

Solo buona nuova musica!

Reviews of Humoresque by Stefano Grondona and Laura Mondiello

Humoresque by Stefano Grondona and Laura Mondiello

In the early twentieth century in Argentina’s society and especially in Buenos Aires there was a remarkable interest and development for the guitar world, welcoming artists and luthiers in Barcelona. Catalan Domingo Prat, who was a pupil of the great Miguel Llobet, moved to Buenos Aires and brought with him little by little all the Catalan world. Llobet arrived in Argentina in 1910 made many concert tours, and even he thought about his trasferiment in South America. Maria Luisa Anido (1907-1996), a great Argentina’s guitarist, former a Prat’s student, became a pupil of Llobet. They formed a guitar duo with a repertoire prepared by Llobet himself, and that unfortunately only made two concert tours in 1925 and 1929. Part of this repertoire was published in the '60s, part was lost. No one has heard anything about it untill Stefano Grondona, during his obsessive and enthusiastic rediscovery and reassessment of the Llobet’s character, found it in Barcelona, and has begun his disclosure through the formation of a duo with Laura Mondiello and cds recodrings, initially with the CD Homenaje and now, always for Stradivarius, with this excellent Humoresque.

This disc has all the musics, known and unpublished, of the repertoire of the duo that were not included in Homanaje, creating a Word Premiere Recordings of absolute respect. There are the music of Albeniz and Granados, but also those of the Catalan musicologist Lopez-Chavarri, as well as some classic transcriptions: Daquin, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky. The Grondona and Mondiello Duo open a new world with these recordings, strictly played using two original Torres, a world in which Llobet could test and develop the creative and harmonics aspects of the guitar, coming, thanks to innovative lutherie Torres, to discover new possibilities and new musical colors. Subject of criticism at the time the work of this duo and his repertoire finally found its rightful position among the giants of the guitar thanks to the passion and virtuosity of Stefano Grondona and Laura Mondiello. Listen to them and be enchanted, it’s difficult to report a piece over another, though personally I liked very much the novel's famous Hungara Dance No.5 by Brahms. Indispensable.

L'Arsenale 2012 Nuova Musica a Treviso

L'arsenale 2012 - Nuova Musica a Treviso
L'arsenale 2012_Nuova Musica a Treviso

ore 18:00 RUMORE, ALEA E INDETERMINAZIONE

ore 20:30 HAPPY NEW EARS
Christopher McIntyre - trombone, Marco Fusi - violino, Roberto Durante - pianoforte, Simone Beneventi - percussioni, Giorgio Klauer - elettronica

Installazioni, concerti, elettronica, funghi...

SABATO 10

ore 09:00 RiSiGNIFICARE GLI SPAZI URBANI

ore 15:00 STORIA DELLE RISONANZE

ore 18:00 PROVE APERTE
Peter Ablinger, Emanuele Torquati

DOMENICA 11

ore 11:30 Matinée-2. VOICES AND PIANO
Emanuele Torquati - pianoforte, Peter Ablinger - composizione ed elettronica

P. Ablinger - Voices and piano: Morton Feldman, Hanna Schygulla, Orson Welles, Guillaume Apollinaire, Mila Haugova, Anna Magnani*, Humbero Maturana, Valentina Tereshkova, José Luis Borges, Agnes Martin, Pierpaolo Pasolini

Review of Capriccio Diabolico by Eva Fampas, 2007 Bèrben

Eva Fampas is a Greek guitarist, an excellent musician that unites a noteworthy technical ability to a strong expressiveness and temperament. She shows it very well in his 2007 excellent record for the Italian Bèrben where she performs, with the only exception of the Capriccio Diabolico by M. Castelnuovo Tedesco, about twenty passages of Greek composers. I confess my ignorance for the "cultured" Greek music, even if I love Greek country, its tradition and people I have never had the possibility to deepened its culture and popular music. With this record it is given me the chance to listen to it: the music played by Mrs Fampas are all very beautiful ones, yearning and slightly melancholy. They bring to the mind immages of warm summer evenings in front of their beautiful sea and of small places bleached under the light of the sun and ulivi’s cultivations.
Almost all the music of this cd are in premiere recording and of authors of the XX century, I signal you: Study on Ancient Greek Harmonies (6 passages) by Petros Tabouris (1964), Four Brazilian Pieces  by Walter Branco (1929) Five Songs From the movies by Manos Hadjidakis (1925-1944 transcribed for guitar by Tasos Karakatsanis and Dimitris Fampas, Barcarola by Gerasimos Pylarinos (1949), Baiao lunar by Andersen Viana, Estudes of Style by Amarantos Amarantidis and the Greek Dances for two Guitars by Dimitri Fampas (1922 -1996) played together with Kostas Tseregof.
Over one hourly of Greek music for guitar, indeed very beautiful, an interesting repertoire indeed, very melodic, very pleasant, distant years light from Darmstadt and surely more next to the neoclassic ideas of Castelnuovo Tedesco. According to me it is to rediscover, I hope you won't always play the same things, isn’t true?

Ensemble L'arsenale, Nuova Musica a Treviso 2012

L'arsenale 2012_Nuova Musica a Treviso

Review of Bach Guitar Duo di Florindo Baldissera e Vittorino Nalato, 2008

P1010445

Centuries later after his death and his rediscovery thanks to Mendelssohn, Bach’s almost physical presence and importance in the Western music seems to have not yet exhausted his influence and, more importantly, the possibilities of implementing and exploration of that wonderful musical and cultural baggage that the Great Master has left us a legacy. His compositions are inside the vast music library a further library, a universe organized and defined in an open form that generously lets his performers always new expression and artistic freedoms continually renewed and without having to acknowledge any formal tribute to the god Kronos, whose nefarious work he seems immune. The essayist (and composer) Luciano Berio writes in his wonderful book "A recall to the Future" about the importance of the transcriptions: “The transcription has often been an instrument for commenting and assimilate information and experiences of the past and from other places. This is why it is sometimes difficult to give precise boundaries of the vast territory of the transcription. " This CD is a perfect musical translation of these words, Melita Fontana writes in the booklet accompanying this CD: "Keys have often been transposed and some melodic lines are an octave above or below the original... The musical structure of the pieces (themes, forms and harmonies) has been left unchanged, the only adaptation relating to the idiomatic requirements of the instruments." Florindo Baldisssera and Vittorino Nalato with their guitars recast the music of Bach giving him new blood and gettino back new ideas and forces, this because (again Berio) "If a musical thought will manifest itself fully in relation to a text, must be able to modify the text and, even though it is conditionated by itself, to conduct on it an analytical transformation” .

In this sense, this is the beauty that shines through the notes of this CD: the ability to stay within the tradition and at the same time the courage to make the formal changes that do not alter the content, who expects to hear guitarists who performing Bach with the thought of Segovia would be disappointed, who will accept these new transcriptions will listen to Bach with new ears and draw new ideas and new thoughts, and in a sense, this is the challenge that awaits all classical music.
I finish still quoting Berio: "... everything can be music with the condition that the total being shall be musically conceptualized, analyzed and translated on different levels. Such view and translation is possible only with the notion of music as text: a text multidimensional evolving. " Baldissera and Nalato have stood the test of Bach’s hypertext.

Reviews of Respuesta by Stefano Grondona and Humoresque by Stefano Grondona and Laura Mondiello

P1010554

Respuesta by Stefano Grondona

Respuesta a response, response to redeem the image of a great composer like Llobet, whose production has remained largely unexplored and studied. Stefano Grondona creates a new event with this recording on a double CD, a recording acclaimed by critics and that was presented as Editor's Choice by Gramophone. The program includes the integral recording of works for solo guitar by Llobet included the famous Catalan songs, there are pages of great charm and commitment as the variciones sobre un tema de Sor, Respuesta that gives the title to the CD and other musics like the Five Preludes and three Estilos Argentinos, compositions by Quijano that makes reference to the period spent in Argentina. As a supplement it is added a series of transcriptions and arrangements made by the Catalan composer, expressions of "glances that from the Catalan spirit of Llobet were given to the music by countries that he has visited in its own past experiences" as the same Grondona writes in the nice booklet accompanying the double CD. In this "mixed dish" I suggest the Mazurka de Severina by the Italian Federico Bufaletto, "report of personal satisfaction" of the genovese guitarrist.
Grondona achieves here a world of sound, new and nostalgic at the same time, linked to that direct and privileged connection that he has managed to establish with the bets eight-twentieth-century lutherie represented here by the Torres guitar, model 1887 which he used for recording which seems to be in his hands directly spokesman of the sensitive and delicate soul of the Catalan composer, leaving the listener astonished by such skill and beauty. A recording to own and treasure in your own discoteque, for guitarists and not. Here we goe far beyond the simple appreciation for one instrument and its repertoire.
